EDWARD PENFIELD (1866-1925) "A poster dedicated to the old maids of Simpkinsville."

                    Est: $1,000 - $1,500

EDWARD PENFIELD (1866-1925) "A poster dedicated to the old maids of Simpkinsville." Maquette for poster, 1897. Watercolor on paper. 7 1/2 x 9 inches. Signed, inscribed and dated "By yours in admiration, Edward Penfield, August 10, 1897." This small, framed poster maquette is believed to be dedicated to Ruth McEnerny Stuart, author of In Simpkinsville: Character Tales (1897), as both worked for Harper's at the same time; he created covers and later became the art director, and she wrote and edited for the magazine. The first story in her book, "An Arkansas Prophet," refers to a spotted cat much like the one shown here. The work belonged to Wright Howes, author of U.S.-Iana and antiquarian bookdealer in Chicago in the 1920s through '60s. It was most likely given to him by his uncle, Silas Orrin Howes (1867-1918), who was an editor and bookseller in New York and friend of writers such as Ambrose Bierce and Christopher Morley.

Condition A-: minor creases and abrasions in image; colors slightly attenuated. The Kenwood Country Club was founded in 1894 and opened just one year later on a 20 acre plot of land that was owned by Marshall Field, the department store magnate. In 1896, the club, comprising 12 courts - clay and lawn - was chosen to host a prominent 8-day long national tennis tournament. Depicting fashion, architecture, perspective and sport, this is one of Penfield's most impressive posters. It is likely the first American tennis poster promoting a tournament. Thence by descent to the present consignor.  Footnotes This sign was produced for the Franklin Printing Company's shop front at their 514-520 Ludlow Street location, which was newly renovated in 1920. An illustration by Edward Penfield from 1920 shows the sign displayed outside the shop entrance.  The company originated from Benjamin Franklin's original printing operation, and went through a few iterations over the next two centuries.

There's a debutante, corsage in her hands, for the balls of the early year; an expectant girl, cradling a smiling cat, for the springtime; a gentleman and companion strolling in the summer countryside; and four ladies-in-waiting, waiting, waiting out the close of the year in a carriage with books in hand. It’s a truly lovely collection of Penfield's quiet and concentrated studies. This lot consists of the cover plus four sheets: the complete set. (5) (Art Nouveau; Literary; American; Animals; Cats)

This is a classic example: the woman in her summer rocking-chair keeps herself from us—by way of a hat, her chair turned away from us, and her eyes in her Harper's. The page, though, is solicitously turned toward us. Would she mind if we read over her shoulder? (Art Nouveau; Literary; American)

Penfield made his first visit to Holland the year this poster was created, and were it not for the absence of the artist’s mustache, one can imagine this piece to be an autobiographical slice-of-life, capturing Penfield meditating on the influence the Dutch travels would have on his early 20th century designs.
