      Roy Underwood; Simon Hogan; Ned Grant; Lawrence Pennington born circa 1928; born circa 1930; born circa 1940; born circa 1940 TJAWARR TO PUKERA (2008) synthetic polymer paint on canvas 160 X 196CM PROVENANCE Painted at Ilkurla, Western Australia Spinifex Arts Project, Western Australia (stock C 664) Private Collection, Melbourne This painting is sold with a Spinifex Arts Project certificate that reads: 'Roy Underwood, Simon Hogan, Ned Grant and Lawrence Pennington have worked together on this painting elaborating a specific component of the wide-ranging Wati Kutjara (Two Men) story as it heads from Tjawarr towards Pukera. In this story the father is taking his young, and increasingly dangerous son away from the people to be initiated. Part of the father's purpose in doing so is to 'settle him down' and ameliorate the fears of the people who have been saying that the sons eyes have become 'too dangerous'. As the two snakes travel they are eating the three types of Tjuratja (sweet lerp) shown in the painting; Witjindi, Kaling-kaling and Wapurti. The Tjuratja is found on the leaves and stems of particular trees and is very sweet and much sought after. Later in this story the son tricks the people who have been teasing him by disguising himself as Tjuratja in the cool foggy morning. Not surprisingly Tjuratja is both sought after and also revered substance in Spinifex country with deep mythological connotations.'
