      PAIR OF WILLIS PEPOON (AMERICAN, 1859-1940) HISTORICAL PORTRAITS OF A VIRGINIA MAN AND WIFE, oil on canvas, bust-length depictions of a bearded husband wearing a black suit with bowtie and his young wife dressed in black with a gold brooch and lace collar as well as large hoop earrings. Both signed and dated "PEPOON / 1904" to lower right of painting. Housed in matching Rococo-styled gilt and gesso frames. Dated 1904. 24 1/2" x 29 1/2" canvas, 35 1/2" x 37 3/8" OA. Catalogue Note: This couple is identified through family history as Charles Mason (1810-1888) and his second wife Maria Jefferson Carr Mason (nee Randolph, 1825-1905), of a plantation called "Alto", in King George County, Virginia. Maria was a great-granddaughter of Thomas Jefferson.

She married Oscar Fitzallen Northington of Mecklenberg County, Virginia (1855-1931). This portrait was painted of the widow in 1938. She passed on 25 November 1946.
