        Aug. 25, 2024

        Eric Peris (b. 1939) Masjid Kapitan Keling (Images of Georgetown - 70s & 80s), 2011

        Est: RM2,000 - RM3,500

Located on a quiet and peaceful road on Jalan Kapitan Keling in Penang is the beautiful Masjid Kapitan Keling Mosque. Built by Indian Muslim traders in 1801, it is the oldest mosque structure in Georgetown, Penang. The mosque is renowned for its refined Indian-Mughal architecture, featuring a large central dome. Eric Peris shows the state of the building, through an aerial view of the Masjid Kapitan Keling Mosque, surrounded by a mix of heritage buildings and modern constructions. Eric Peris is one of the leading fine-art photographers specialising in a poetic divine kind of humanism. He worked first in black-and-white before turning to hand-tinting and other technical 'deconstructions' like in his ukiyo-e pictures. He was a photojournalist since 1969 when he joined a magazine called Fanfare and retired as Photo Editor of The New Straits Times (1991-1995). He had been a columnist, co-ordinator, director, consultant and adviser of numerous local and regional photography societies, competitions, events, excursions, programmes and conducted several photojournalism courses. He has held more than 33 solo exhibitions. His book Images Of Gitanjali, a photographic interpretation of Rabindranath Tagore's prize-winning literary work is as much a collector's item as the photography tribute. He studied Physics (Nuclear Physics and Cosmology) at the Singapore University from 1963 to 1969. His parents were also both artists. His Paris-trained father, O. Don Peris (1893-1975), served as royal artist in the Johor court of Sultan Sir Ibrahim. In 2018, he presented a solo exhibition Divinity Within in commemoration of his father at Sutra Gallery. On display were 16 photographs that captured the inner force driving traditional and ritualistic dancers. Mother Nature's Art, a photography exhibition by Eric Peris and KF Choy was held in Sutra Gallery in 2022.

Nature has a way of offering endless designs which can be used to express one's interaction with Nature. One source that I found very exciting were those designs that appear on the barks of the trees, decayed trunks, interaction of light between leaves, the flow of natural design between plants life, the play of shadows. I used the original form and from there create a design in black-and-white and plan out the colours as I ‘see' them (according to Eric Peris' statement on website). Est: RM2,500 - RM5,000

The Mal series was created in memory of Eileen Peris, who was the artist’s beloved mother. A wise and attentive lady, his mother was a guiding light in his life and her insights had a profound influence on the aesthetics of his work. Mal is Sinhalese for flowers which his mother admired dearly. Eric captured the purity of the lotus flower in an ethereal atmosphere, enveloped in glistening light akin to the heavenly stars twinkling in the night. Nov. 06, 2016

        ERIC PERIS (b. 1939) Haiku Impressions, 1988, Photograph, edtion 1 of 5

        Est: RM4,000 - RM5,000

Haiku Impressions is one of revered humanist photographer Eric Peris’s three major series focusing on Japan. The others are Images of Zen and Autumn (two series). The picture of contemplative nirvana was taken at the Daitoku-ji temple, one of 14 autonomous branches of the Rinzai School, and its main one. The temple, founded in 1319, has some two-dozen sub-temples within a large walled complex in Kita-ku in Kyoto, and is associated with the tea ceremony and the powerful daimyo Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Not all the temples are open to the public. Haiku is an epigrammatic Japanese verse form in 17 syllables, with its main exponents being Basho, Issa, Buson and Shiki. The sand-raking mandalas in the garden are created by the monks as a ritual of meditation discipline, and are constantly re-formed. The exhibition, Haiku Impressions, was held at the Equatorial Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, and the Penang State Art Gallery in Penang. Eric was given a Japanese exhibition of his career works by the museum of the ‘Photo Town’ Higashikawa in Hokkaido.Eric Peris is a photo-journalist since 1965 when he joined the defunct magazine, Fanfare, and later worked for The New Straits Times where he retired as Photo Editor (1991-95). He had been a photography newspaper columnist and curator (co-curator, Photography as Art at the National Art Gallery in 1996) besides a co-ordinator/director/consultant/adviser to several programmes, training and competitions. He was the chairman of the Press Awards for Photography. He has held more than 40 solo exhibitions since Through Thai windows and Doorways in 1982. His book, Gitanjali, is a photography interpretation of Nobel-Prize-winning Rabindranath Tagore’s literary work. He studied Physics (Nuclear Physics and Cosmology) at the Singapore University in 1963-69, but did not complete. His father, O. Don Peris (1893-1975) is a pioneer artist who served informally as a royal artist in the Johor court of Sultan Sir Ibrahim.
