      Phillip Perkins (Tennessee, 1907-1970) oil on canvas horizontal abstract painting titled "Weight of the Horizon" depicting intersecting organic forms in gradient segments of color, including black, blue, orange, yellow, green, and red. Signed "Perkins 44" lower right corner. Titled in pencil en verso of stretcher. House in a contemporary chrome frame with a black filet. Sight: 29 1/2" H x 44" W. Framed: 32" H x 52" W. Biography: Philip Perkins received critical acclaim for his geometric, cubist-influenced work of the 1940s and his abstract expressionism in the 1950s. He was born in Waverly, Tennessee and studied at Vanderbilt University and the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1932 he moved to Paris, France, where he studied under Jean Marchaud, Louis Marcoussis, and Fernand Leger. In 1934 he exhibited at the Salon D'Automne and the Salon de Tuileries. In 1940 he moved to New York City and in 1947 participated in the International Surrealist Exhibition. He spent seven years teaching art at the University of Tennessee in Nashville (1948-1955) but went back to Europe for several more years before returning to Nashville in 1961.

Titled, signed, and dated en verso of canvas. Housed in a contemporary black frame with a white linen liner. Sight: 35" H x 52 1/2" W. Framed: 38" H x 55 3/4" W.       PHILLIP PERKINS (1907 - 1970, AMERICAN) The Time of the Eclipse. Oil on canvas. 508x407 mm; 20x16 inches. Partial signature, Perkins, lower right. Inscribed as titled on stretcher. Provenance: Private Collection, NJ; Gary Snyder Fine Art, NY. Philip Perkins studied at Vanderbilt University in Nashville from 1925 to 1926 and at the Chicago Art Institute from 1926 to 1931. In 1932 he moved to Paris, France and studied with Jean Marchaud and Louis Marcoussis until 1934. He continued his studies with Fernand Leger from 1934 to 1937. In 1934 he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Tuilleries in Paris. Until 1937. Perkins left Paris in 1940 and moved to New York City where he shared a studio with Surrealist artist Yves Tanguy until around 1945. He is best known for his geometric, cubist influenced work of the forties. In 1947 he participated in the International Surrealist Exhibition, Galerie Maeght, Paris. Perkins returned to Nashville in 1948 where he taught at the University of Tennessee's Extension School until 1953. Two years later he received a two-year fellowship from the School of International Painting in Sergovia, Spain. For the next four years Perkins lived, painted and exhibited in Spain and on the Isle of Ibiza. Perkins returned to Paris to live and paint in 1959 only to return to Nashville again two years later. Philip Perkins died in Nashville in 1970. (Gary Snyder Fine Art, NY)
