(without the 2 last bl. pp.; occ. foxing). - Counterfeit of the first edition, with a woodcut ornament in place of the printer's device on title, a different collation (i.a. without the explanation of terms, errata and privilege) and with the 11 fold. pl. by Sébastien Le Clerc, with the figures in the plates inverted cp. to the 1st edition. Summarised version of the famous work of Vitruvius by Cl. Perrault (1613-1688), physician and architect, who had translated in 1673 the entire work of the Latin architect. It responds to the wish of the architect Philibert Delorme (ca. 1514-1570) who wanted to see Vitruvius abridged and arranged by subjects as it was not in the original work. Ref. Basset et al., 1688. ⁂ First English edition of an important work of comparative biology, first published by the French Académie des Sciences in 1671-1676. Memoirs was translated by Alexander Pitfeild, and The Measure of Earth (part 2, with separate title page) by Richard Waller, both Fellows of the Royal Society.

The second part, entitled 'The Measure of the Earth' and with a separate title-page, is Richard Waller's translation of Perrault's attempt to remeasure an arc of meridian for measuring the earth's radius, with 5 engravings of scientific instruments and diagrams.

Poggendorff II, 406. – Die erstmals 1671 erschienene Abhandlung von Claude Perrault (1613-1688) enthält Beschreibungen und anatomische Kupfertafeln verschiedener Säugetiere. Die Abhandlung "Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire naturelle des animaux" ausgearbeitet von Charles Perrault (1613-1688), "Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire des plantes" von Denis Dodart (1634-1707). – Vortitel mit hinterlegter Randläsur, Titelblatt mit geschlossenem perforiertem Besitzvermerk, ebenso Tafel 98 innerhalb der Darstellung. Stellenweise etwas gebräunt, einige Tafeln gering braunfleckig und mit zartem Durchdruck. Interessantes und insgesamt wohlerhaltenes Exemplar, mit den vollständigen Kupfertafeln in kräftigem Druck.

      Second Engl. edition .- Extensive study about various species. The large-sized and impressive plates show the exterior and interior of various animals. In the last third of the book there is a considerably contribution by the astronomer John Picard about the typographical survey of the earth which is supplemented by numerous plates. - Pages partly a bit creased, rarley stained or at the margin waterstained. At large a nice copy of this rare edition. Zweite engl. Ausgabe .- Garrison-Morton 295, Nissen 3125, Russel 662 .- Umfangreiches Werk zu den verschiedensten Tierarten. Die großformatigen und bestechenden Tafeln zeigen Außen- und Innenansichten unterschiedlicher und seltener Tiere. Im letzten Drittel des Werkes findet sich ein umfangreicher Beitrag des Astronomen John Picard über die Vermessung der Erde der von zahlreichen Tafeln ergänzt wird. - Seiten teils etwas geknickt, seltener fleckig bzw. am Rand wasserrandig. Insgesamt ein sehr schönes Exemplar dieser seltenen Ausgabe.
