Essex.- Chapman (John) and Peter André. A Map of the County of Essex from an Actual Survey, engraved throughout, 26 double-page engraved sheets mounted on stubs, including pictorial title, list of subscribers and key map, all with full contemporary hand-colouring, some light browning and offsetting, occasional spotting, key map with crease to centre fold, with John Chapman's engraved decorative trade label to front pastedown, also bookplate of William Charles de Meuron, Earl Fitzwilliam, contemporary half calf, rubbed, rebacked, spine with grey morocco label and ruled in gilt, [Rodger 120], folio (550 x 380mm.), John Chapman, 1777. ⁂ This fine large-scale map shows the county in close detail, including the names of all country houses and cottages, as well as the owner's name in many cases. There are also small inset plans of Colchester and Harwich Harbour, while the title depicts a fulling mill with two workers washing and beating cloth in the river. William Charles de Meuron Wentworth-Fizwilliam, 7th Earl Fitzwilliam (1872-1943), politician and army officer, one of the richest men in England once he had inherited the earldom on the death of his grandfather. He was born in a remote part of Canada, where his parents were reputedly travelling for his father's health, which later caused controversy over his inheritance to the title. It was suggested that he was a changeling, a baby brought into the family in an attempt to rid it of epilepsy and to claim the title for that side of the family

DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. In Congress, July 4, 1776. The Unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen United States of America. When in the Course of Human Events.... [Washington, D.C.: engraved by William J. Stone for Peter Force, after 1833.] Engraved broadside. 745 x 640 mm (visible 700 x 620 mm). Toned, long tear at each side below lowest fold, with single vertical center-fold, and two equidistant horizontal folds. Matted and framed. The Force Declaration of Independence was actually printed sometime after 1833 by William J. Stone from his original plate begun in 1820. In 1833 Force proposed an ambitious compilation of important original American documents, American Archives, and commissioned Stone to print a number of copies of the Declaration on a translucent tracing paper. These printings included the alteration to the copperplate that is still evident: "W.J. Stone sc. Washington" in the lower right (lower left of the print). The "Force Declaration" is the most attainable example of the Stone Declaration on the market, though still quite rare. The foldlines present in this copy would suggest this was one of the broadsides that was never bound, but was folded for storage, before it was framed.

[DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE]. In Congress, July 4, 1776. The Unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen United States of America. When in the Course of Human Events... [Washington, D.C., engraved by W.I. Stone, 1823, printed by Peter Force, 1848]. Folio broadside (30¼ x 25 5/8 in.), a narrow strip (1/2 in. wide) of blank margin trimmed at top (where once bound), the fine-grained paper with almost invisible evidence of old folds, very slight cockling and minor spots at extreme edges, otherwise in clean, fresh condition. Neatly matted. A FINE COPY OF PETER FORCE'S 1848 PRINTING OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE FROM THE W.J. STONE 1823 COPPERPLATE, ON FINE PAPER Twenty-five years after Stone's elaborate engraved facsimile on parchment had been printed and distributed, Peter Force (1790-1868) utilized Stone's surviving copperplate to print new impressions on fine rice paper with a color tone quite similar to parchment. These were intended for inclusion in Force's American Archives, a planned monumental compilation of important original American documents, prepared at the instigation of and funded by Congress. Force conscientiously deleted Stone's 1823 imprint in the upper portion of the plate, and added a new imprint ("W.J. Stone sc. Washington.") in the lower left. A total of 1,500 copies of American Archives were authorized by Congress, but subscriptions for the elaborate edition were disappointing, and in the end many fewer copies (perhaps only 500) were issued. Since copies of Force's Declaration exist both with and without folds, it is probable that a handful were never folded for binding (an unfolded copy was sold at Christie's, 18 December 2003, lot 249, $40,000).

              JOHANN HEINRICH LAMBERT (1728-1777)

              Est: £20,000 - £30,000

Photometria sive de mensura et gradibus luminis, colorum et umbrae. Augsburg: Christoph Peter Detleffsen for the widow of Eberhard Klett, 1760. 8° (183 x 115 mm). 8 folding engraved plates. (Small dampstain in bottom margin of last few leaves.) Contemporary German pink papered-covered boards, manuscript title-label on spine, edges sprinkled red and blue (sunned, abrasion on spine from label removal, front hinge split but holding). Provenance: Dominican Convent, Augsburg (bookplate) -- small, illegible title stamp. FIRST EDITION OF THE FOUNDATION FOR THE EXACT MEASUREMENT OF LIGHT. A very good copy in contemporary boards. Lambert's discoveries 'are of fundamental importance in astronomy, photography and visual research generally... Both Kepler and Huygens had investigated the intensity of light, and the first photometer had been constructed by Pierre Bouguer (1698-1758); but the foundation of the science of photometry -- the exact scientific measurement of light -- was laid by Lambert's 'Photometry'... In the Photometria he described his photometer and propounded the law of the absorption of light named after him. He investigated the principles and properties of light, of light passing through transparent media, light reflected from opaque surfaces, physiological optics, the scattering of light passing through transparent media, the comparative luminosity of the heavenly bodies and the relative intensities of coloured lights and shadows' (PMM).
