      • NORI PETER (Budapest, Hungary, 1935-2009) and LIMOGES, France. Two plates. One in LIMOGES porcelain, the other illustrated with painting by NORI PETER. Marks on the back of both.
        Jul. 20, 2023

NORI PETER (Budapest, Hungary, 1935-2009) and LIMOGES, France. Two plates. One in LIMOGES porcelain, the other illustrated with painting by NORI PETER. Marks on the back of both.

        Est: €100 - €150

NORI PETER (Budapest, Hungary, 1935-2009) and LIMOGES, France. Two plates. One in LIMOGES porcelain, the other illustrated with painting by NORI PETER. Marks on the reverse of both. Measurements: 25,5 cm. diameter, the larger one. Nori Peter attended the school of fine arts and the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. He studied with some of the great Hungarian painters until the 1956 revolution, when he emigrated with his mother to Canada. To survive in Canada, Nori began painting portraits and opened a gallery in Toronto, where she met many of her patrons and collectors. He painted portraits for the first six years of his 17 years in Toronto. He continued to paint portraits on commission, nori claims to have painted over 600 portraits. In 1965, a doctor and his wife invited her to visit northern Canada. It was then that she began to paint the Inuit, and her sensitive and romantic portraits of them, especially the children, earned her enough of a reputation that she was asked to exhibit her paintings at eaton's college street art gallery in toronto. This relationship lasted until the gallery closed a few years later. Nori returned several times to the northern Inuit settlements. He learned that most Canadian souvenirs were made outside the country, so while in Toronto, Nori produced a series of ceramic figurines of the Inuit people. He later worked on many porcelain figurines and bronze casts of children. His images attracted the attention of Kaiser Porcelain, The Bradford Exchange and Anna Peranna. These companies produced tens of thousands of wall plaques featuring Nori's work. At one time she worked in stained glass and her work appears on placemats, coffee mugs and postcards. She is most proud of the work she has done for several Ontario churches, where ceramic sculptures, murals and paintings adorn the walls. In the early 1960s, Nori met the Whetungs, who now run a large gallery in Curve Lake, Ontario, not far from Peterborough. They encouraged her to exhibit her work in the curve lake gallery. She moved to live in curve lake after 17 years in toronto. She also lived in lakefield, emerald isle and buckhorn lake, ennismore, where her studio was located and where she resided until her death. He enjoyed the peterborough and kawartha lakes area. nori has had a 30-year relationship with the koyman gallery in ottawa and the klimantiris gallery in montreal. He has also exhibited his work at 737 gallery near Tweed, Ontario. He has worked in various media and claims to have painted thousands of oil paintings, his favourite thing to do. Many of these paintings are still in homes in the Peterborough area. Several print editions of his work have been published. Over the years he supported many organisations with donations of his work. He was also very fond of animals and birds, especially husky dogs, which he sometimes depicted in his paintings. His work is represented in several corporate collections. It is in the University of Calgary Gallery, the Edmonton Art Gallery, the Provincial Art Gallery of Newfoundland, Labrador and the National Gallery of Canada. Limoges enamelling has a long tradition dating back to the Middle Ages, in particular to the last painting of the 12th century. It was the most important enamel workshop in France, and owed its success in particular to its production of enamel-decorated objects in addition to the usual enamelled plates. Its medieval pieces had their own characteristics, such as a very shallow background dragging or a very fine partitioning for details, as well as an innovative chromatism that included new tones such as light blue-grey or white.
