HUGO V. PETERSEN (Denmark, 1870-1959). “Portrait of a seated man.” Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower left corner. In good condition. Measurements: 54 x 40 cm; 65 x 51 cm (frame). Known as “the maharajah painter” due to his fascination with India, Hugo V. Petersen made numerous trips to the East to offer us beautiful traditional prints and portraits of the local people. On this occasion he shows us a young man leaning against the wall, thoughtful and absorbed, looking ahead in an attitude of rest. Orientalism was born in the 19th century as a consequence of the romantic spirit of escape in time and space. The first orientalists sought to reflect the lost, the unattainable, in a dramatic journey destined from the beginning to fail. Like Flaubert in “Salambó”, the painters make meticulous portraits of the east and imagined past, recreated to the millimeter but ultimately unknown and idealized. During the second half of the 19th century, however, many of the painters who traveled to the Middle East in search of that invented reality discovered a different and new country, which stood out with its peculiarities above the stereotypes and prejudices of Europeans. Thus, this new orientalist school leaves behind the beautiful odalisques, the harems and the slave markets to paint nothing more than what they see, the real East in all its everyday dimension. Along with the change in vision comes a technical and formal change; Since it is no longer a question of recreating an imagined world in all its details, the brushstroke acquires impressionistic ease, and the artists focus not so much on the representation of the types and customs as on the faithful reflection of the atmosphere of the place, the own identity of the North African populations.
