      • Robert Petersen (American, b. 1945), "Mexico #1"
        Dec. 08, 2021

        Robert Petersen (American, b. 1945), "Mexico #1"

        Est: $3,000 - $5,000

Acrylic and graphite on board, dated 1995 lower left, titled "Mexico #1" lower center and initialed lower right. Mounted to a heavily constructed plywood backing, unframed. The painting has a luminescent or metallic sheen that is difficult to portray in photography. Petersen clearly was a master at creating depth in a work through application and layering. 60" ht. x 42" wd. Robert Petersen  (American, b. 1945) spent some of his early career years (1969-1970) at the famed Gemini G.E.L., a veritable hub of innovative printmaking in Los Angeles which hosted the likes of Frank Stella, Jasper Johns, David Hockney, James Rosenquist, Claes Oldenberg, Ellsworth Kelly, and numerous others.  He was particularly drawn to and collaborative with Robert Rauschenberg, for whom he was the assistant printmaker for Rauschenberg's "Stoned Moon".  In 1970, Petersen moved with Rauschenberg to Captiva to continue to work until 1980.  Much of his work focused on minimalist constructions, much of which was monochromatic.  This example, "Mexico #1", is a monumental example.
