    • MISKA PETERSHAM [PETREZSELYEM MIHALY] (1888-1960) "The Earth's Adoration."
      Jun. 24, 2021

MISKA PETERSHAM [PETREZSELYEM MIHALY] (1888-1960) "The Earth's Adoration."

      Est: $6,000 - $9,000

MISKA PETERSHAM [PETREZSELYEM MIHALY] (1888-1960) "The Earth's Adoration." Illustration for unknown publication. Pen, ink, and gouache on paper. 224x146 mm; 8 3/4x5 3/4 inches, on 12x9-inch sheet. Signed "Petrezselyem M. Petersham" in lower left image; possibly dated "1911[?]" and signed "Petrezselyem" again, in lower margin. Hinged to window matte; framed. A beautiful, detailed drawing and among the earliest that we could locate signed with his Hungarian birth name. Maud and Mishka Petersham were groundbreaking illustrators and publishers during the golden age of children's book publishing in America, producing over 100 books in a span of over five decades. This detailed drawing, very much in the manner of Harry Clarke and his fellow Hungarian and friend, the illustrator Willy Pogány, may have been done while he was a student at Budapest's Royal National School for Applied Arts or perhaps soon after his arrival in New York in 1912.

    • PETERSHAM, MISKA. 1888-1960.- "The Crucifixion,"
      Dec. 11, 2013

      PETERSHAM, MISKA. 1888-1960.- "The Crucifixion,"

      Est: $1,500 - $2,000

"The Crucifixion," pen and ink, 210 x 145 mm, double signed in Hungarian and English "PETRESZELYEM M. PETERSHAM" lower left. Matted and framed. Illustration for an unknown publication. Hungarian-born Miska Petersham and his American wife Maud Fuller Petersham were perhaps the most popular children's book illustrating couple of the first half of the twentieth century. They met across the table of the International Art Service studios in New York where they were both employed. After they married in 1917, they formed a highly successful illustration team that led to the Caldecott Medal in 1946. "The Crucifixion" was apparently drawn before the two wed for it has both his names in Hungarian and the Anglicized version after he passed through Ellis Island in 1912. The strong influence of the Vienna Secession and Hungarian folk art is evident in this early work.
