Catalogue Note: This lot is accompanied by a 1993 letter from Lauren Suber at Colonial Williamsburg to Marshall concerning the present portrait, "I think there's a good chance she's Mrs. Mann Page (Mary Tayloe Page, 1758-1835. The artist's style looks much like illustrations I've seen of Philippe Abraham Peticolas's work." Mrs. Page was the daughter of John and Rebecca (Plater) Tayloe of Mount Airy, Richmond Co., VA. Philippe Abraham Peticolas (1760-1841) was a French immigrant artist, who, after fleeing with his family from the Haitian Revolution, eventually settled in Richmond, Virginia in the opening years of the 19th century. Philippe and his brothers soon established a studio in their newly adopted city, where Peticolas announced himself in the January 7, 1807 edition of the Richmond Inquirer as a "Professor of Music and Miniature Painting." Successful in these endeavors, Philippe maintained a decades-long presence in the city as one of its finest miniature portrait painters.
