    Feb. 26, 2025

Figures in the manner of JACOB PETIT (1796-1865); France, c. 1840. Enameled, glazed and partially gilded porcelain.

    Est: €500 - €600

Figures in the manner of JACOB PETIT (1796-1865); France, c. 1840. Enameled, glazed and partially gilded porcelain. Measurements: 31 x 13 x 13 cm (x2). Pair of sculptures in the manner of Jacob Petit made in porcelain representing a couple formed by a woman and a man, both dressed in colorful and idealized clothes that transport the viewer to an earlier world of gallant and amiable scenes. Jacob Petit (1796-1865) was one of the most famous porcelain artists of the 19th century. After traveling extensively in Europe, he returned to France and established a modest porcelain manufactory in Sèvres in 1830. As his business expanded, he moved to a rented factory in Fontainebleau in 1834 and by 1838 was offering highly prized ornamental objects to a distinguished clientele. His work was an innovative fusion of neoclassical, rococo and romantic elements that blended complex motifs and sculptural forms using a vivid and distinctive palette. He is generally credited with introducing Rococo to Parisian porcelain production in 1834, which was a radical departure from the prevailing neoclassical fashion.

Jacob Petit (1796-1868) French, Porcelain Cachepot

    Est: $100 - $200

Jacob Petit (1796-1868), French, Antique 19th Century Hand-Painted Porcelain Cachepot with Lion-Headed Feet. From Paris. Size: 4 3/4 X 4 3/4 X 5 in. #5357 . Jacob Petit, born Jacob Mordecai in 1796, was a celebrated French manufacturer of porcelain in the 19th Century. After studying drawing in the studio of Antoine-Jean Gros, a follower of Jacques-Louis David, Petit joined the Sevres Manufactory in 1822, where he painted porcelain wares. After traveling and studying throughout Europe he returned to France in 1830 and bought a porcelain factory in Fontainebleau with his brother Mardochee. Later he opened a workshop in Paris in 1863, where his vases, statuettes, and clocks became famous for their ornamental character, pastel colors, and their reinterpretation of the neo-Rococo style of the early 19th Century. He passed away in 1868. This cachepot - a French term for what is usually called in modern English a “planter” for a plant and its flowerpot - is exquisitely detailed, a prime example of his work.
