John Frederick Peto Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Still life painter, b. 1854 - d. 1907

(b Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 1854; d Island Heights, New Jersey 1907). American painter. John Frederick Peto has a singular place in the American tradition of trompe l'oeil. He follows its subject matter and pictorial conventions, but his more painterly technique, with its obvious, expressive paint handling, belies the supreme intention of deceiving the eye. It is difficult to know precisely how Peto became intrigued by this form of trompe l'oeil, since it is relatively rare in the history of art. Peto did not remain long in the public, artistic realm after he started painting and exhibiting. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Peto was the son of Thomas Peto, a man who, among other jobs, sold picture frames, which may have fed Peto's artistic leanings. Philadelphia had a long history of still life, with a particular tendency toward trompe l'oeil. Peto studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts between 1877 and 1878, and subsequently showed in the Academy's Annual Exhibitions until the mid -1880s. Despite commissions from local Philadelphians, for whom Peto made many pictures, and patrons outside Philadelphia, Peto disengaged himself from the art world. (as Still Life with Box, probably 1890s) Lot note: Born in 1854 in Philadelphia, John Frederick Peto was an American master in trompe l'oeil (or trick of the eye) effects. Much of Peto's work, particularly those that include fruits, vases, and jars, including Still Life with Almonds (Lot 20) and Still Life with Box, Orange, and Bottle (Lot 21), invites comparisons to the great French master, Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin. While there is no record that Peto was familiar with Chardin's work, it is likely that he was aware of Chardin's oeuvre and might have even seen the French artist's work in person. The present two paintings recall the work of Chardin for its simple elegance, celebration of quotidian life, and prioritization of light effects. However, Peto stands out amongst other still life painters for simplifying his objects' forms, which grants them an abstract power without obscuring their appearance. Additionally, both of the still lifes here are particularly striking examples of the artist's use of bright colors, a hallmark of his work.

        Est: $6,000 - $9,000

Oil on canvas. 5 1/2 x 9 in. Books and Ink Bottle is an intimate, small painting that depicts a bookshelf. The lovely beam of light shining on the right side of the painting exposes the texture of the beautiful, if not slightly worn, pages. The anonymity of the books contributes a mysterious quality to the painting that makes its appeal universal: whether they are the oeuvre of the Brontë sisters or Edgar Allen Poe, the viewer is invited to unleash their imagination. The painting and frame are both in excellent condition with rich colors and lively sheen. This painting is unique due to the unusually high contrast and dark tonality, which Peto often diffused in most of his other work.

        Est: $12,000 - $18,000

Oil on canvas. 5 x 6 1/2 in. Featuring an incredible level of detail in such an intimate painting, Ginger Pot, Cake, Lemons perfectly communicates the loveliness of teatime. Peto often looked at objects that held a nostalgic aura, rather than luxurious foods, but this painting is a wonderful exception that retains the emotions the objects and foods might evoke: sentimentality, familiarity, and coziness. Demonstrating a wide range of consistency and texture, from the delineation between the icing and the spongy interior of the cake, to the shiny lemon slice, Peto excels at the challenge.

        Est: $15,000 - $25,000

Oil on canvas. 6 x 8 3/4 in. A lovely, small piece by Peto, Pipe, Tobacco and Books is a livelier painting with lighter colors, including warm whites, orange, and green. The delicate tobacco pot with gold leafing provides excellent contrast with the bound books. The burnt matches in the foreground provides an excellent opportunity for Peto to demonstrate his skill as he depicts the texture of the brittle head. The matches also provide an opportunity for storytelling that verges on the cinematic: someone has just been here, smoking and reading. The painting and the frame are both in excellent condition. The distinctive colors and the range of shadows showcase Peto’s characteristic visual language at its best.

‘Still Life with Pipe”, oil on academy board, inscribed on reverse, “Painted by my father, John F. Peto – Helen Peto Smiley". Several gallery labels verso. John Frederick Peto was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of a dealer in picture frames. Little is known of his early artistic training except that he enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1877 and during the next half dozen years he contributed works to its annual exhibitions. Peto spent most of his career working in relative obscurity in the small coastal town of Island Heights, New Jersey, away from mainstream art circles. However, he is recognized today as one of America's foremost exponents of trompe l'oeil ('fool the eye') still life, a mode of painting that was highly popular during the late nineteenth century, practiced by the likes of William Harnett (1848-1892) and John Haberle (1856-1933). Peto's artfully composed still lifes range from the whimsical to the meditative and are comprised of worn & commonplace objects. Through skillful manipulation of color, form and composition, John Frederick Peto imbued his paintings with deeper meaning, all the while impressing the viewer with his ability to obscure the boundaries between reality and illusion. Overall Size: 11 1/2 x 14 1/2 in. Sight Size: 6 1/8 x 9 1/4 in.

JOHN FREDERICK PETO American (1854-1907) Still Life with Pipe, Candlestick and Book, c. 1890 oil on board, inscribed on the reverse "Painted by my father John Frederick Peto, Helen Peto Smiley" 7 1/4 x 9 3/4 inches Provenance: Sotheby's, New York, New York, June 6, 1997, lot 200; Christie's, New York, New York, November 29, 2000, lot 53; Goldman Collection; Private Collection, New York. Other Notes: A shy, reclusive man who spent most of his career removed from any urban art center, John Frederick Peto has emerged as one of the most romantic and enigmatic figures in late nineteenth-century American art. Because he made no statements about his art, no personal letters have survived, and he rarely exhibited his work, he was virtually unknown until the late 1940s when art historian Alfred Frankenstein began his comprehensive study of American trompe l'oeil painters that culminated in the 1953 publication of his After the Hunt: William Michael Harnett and Other American Still Life Painters, 1870-1900. In this important work, Frankenstein recognized Peto as a distinct artistic personality whose work was frequently forged with Harnett's signature. While the two artists were friends, and often painted similar still-life subjects (books, mugs, pipes, musical instruments), Peto's work is clearly distinguished from Harnett's by its looser brushwork, softly diffused light, and sense of melancholy created by his use of aged and tattered objects. Harnett's still-life objects may be old and well-used, but they are always elegant, sumptuous, and crisply delineated. Furthermore, Harnett's work does not have the brooding, introspective mood so evident in Peto's work. Peto's life and work was thoroughly studied by John Wilmerding in his 1983 study, Important Information Inside: The Art of John F. Peto and the Idea of Still-Life Painting in Nineteenth-Century America. Born in Philadelphia in 1854, Peto may have acquired his interest in art from his father, Thomas H. Peto, who was a dealer in picture frames. By the mid-1870s, Peto was listed as an artist in the city's directories, and in 1877 he enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. While there he studied briefly with Thomas Eakins. His attraction to still-life painting is not surprising considering the strong tradition of the genre in Philadelphia and the fact that he would have been familiar with examples by the Peales, Severin Roesen, and John F. Francis. Perhaps the greatest influence on his art was his friendship with William Michael Harnett, whom Peto met in Philadelphia before 1880, the year Harnett left for Europe. Peto maintained various studios in Philadelphia over the next decade, and exhibited his work on occasion at the Academy. In 1887, while in Cincinnati working on a commission, Peto met Christine Pearl Smith, whom he married in June of that year. The couple settled in Philadelphia, but began to spend time in the resort community of Island Heights, New Jersey, where Peto, a talented cornetist, played for the Methodist camp meetings. In 1889, Peto built a house and moved permanently to Island Heights, where he and Christine raised their only daughter, Helen. He continued to paint, and also took up photography. He ceased to exhibit his work in Philadelphia, preferring to show it from time to time at the local drugstore. Peto died in Island Heights in 1907. tags: oil painting, still life, 19th century

EXHIBITED: "American Still Lifes of the Nineteenth Century," Hirschl & Adler Galleries, Inc., New York, New York, December 1-31, 1971, no. 35. LITERATURE: American Still Lifes of the Nineteenth Century, an exhibition catalogue, Hirschl & Adler Galleries, Inc., New York, New York, 1971, p. 27, no. 35 (illustrated). J. Wilmerding, Important Information Inside: The Art of John F. Peto and the Idea of Still-Life Painting in Nineteenth-Century America, Washington, D.C., 1983, fig. 40, pp. 62-63 (illustrated). NOTE: Painting in the tradition of fellow artists Charles Willson Peale and his son Raphaelle, John Haberle and William Harnett (the latter with whom he was closely associated) Philadelphia born and New Jersey raised John Frederick Peto was a master of trompe l'oeil painting in the second half of the 19th century. Generally working on a small scale, Peto presented objects such as salt-glazed mugs, pipes, books, matches (the latter four objects all included in the present painting), pistols, newspapers, oranges, tobacco boxes and letter racks in their true sizes and usually not cut off by the edges of the painting. The present piece, a horizontal arrangement which essentially relies on the pairing of a mug, a pipe and a book, shows the artist's unpretentious concern with pure, almost abstracted, shapes and designs. The objects are arranged in a compact space, encompassed by important shadows which provide an overall sense of depth to the picture. Everything appears to rest in place together, held down as much by the gravity of light as of the group's mass. The painting is part of a series of works both intimate in feeling and small in size, in which, as Thomas Quick points out, "Peto carries the tone of reserve and isolation." While Peto's paintings were shown at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the artist had a studio in Philadelphia, he surprisingly never had a gallery exhibition during his lifetime. While closely associated with William Harnett, Peto's work was, for quite a while, less revered. In fact, a group of Peto's paintings were 'discovered' in 1905 bearing false Harnett signatures, though Peto's trompe l'oeil oils are generally characterized by having less defined contours, more prosaic objects, greater focus on the effects of light and a softer atmosphere than Harnett's works. It is noteworthy that there has been somewhat of a resurgence in interest in this oft-forgotten still life painter, and Still Life with Salt-Glazed Mug, Book, Pipe and Match is a fine addition to the artist's corpus, particularly with its distinguished exhibition history and provenance, having been in the private collection of Mr. Albert Frankenstein, the leading scholar on the work of John F. Peto, for several years.
