Marble Pot, Aristide Petrilli, Florence 1868 until around 1930 Florence

    Est: €6,000 - €8,000

Marble Pot Aristide Petrilli Florence 1868 until around 1930 Florence Carrara marble Signed, centered on a cylindrical body Height 40 cm, diameter 50 cm, with lion heads 60 cm This fancifully designed marble basin (40 x 60 cm) was created by none other than the Florentine master sculptor Aristide Petrilli (1868-1930), as the prominent signature (Prof. A. Petrilli) reveals. He was highly specialized in making marble and alabaster sculptures in the historicist-classicist manner in his workshop. He also exhibited at the Société des Artistes Français in 1896 and at the Paris World's Fair in 1900. This outstanding basin is littered with finely crafted motifs with varied symbolism. There is no particular front, which means that the object can be admired equally from all sides. First of all, the four lion protomes with spouts are striking. Their elaboration with deeply furrowed eyebrows, finely notched eyes and dramatically waving curls of hair is reminiscent of those heads of Roman tub sarcophagi. The so-called lion-hunting sarcophagus from the late imperial period in Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum is particularly noteworthy here. In antiquity, lions were particularly associated with power, strength and a high social rank of the patron and can therefore be interpreted as both a victorious and apotropaic symbol. The lion is also present as a heraldic animal, with heavy armor helmet over its head, holding up a coat of arms. The lion is reminiscent of Marzocco, the lion who holds the coat of arms of Florence as a shield holder with his right paw in front of his body. The protruding circular forms are strongly reminiscent of the symbolic coat of arms of the influential Florentine Medici family. This motif is interpreted in different ways; for example, it could refer to the apples of the Hesperides stolen by Hercules, which give eternal youth. In addition, there is a connection with the so-called Medici lions (1598) on the Loggia die Lanzi, which as symbols of rule reflect political power and economic wealth and were therefore frequently copied. Another popular heraldic animal is the bull, which appears as a bust and is depicted above a bull's head shield. The bull is often depicted rising in an attacking position, for example on the coat of arms of the city of Turin. A smaller coat of arms with an attached helmet shows an eagle sitting on it with outstretched wings. Another coat of arms shows a ladder with four flanking half moons, reminiscent of the Scaliger, the lords of Verona in the 13th and 14th centuries. The helmet set on top is monumental in design and bears the sculptor's signature below the pair of wings set on top, which is probably meant to symbolize victory. The symbols surrounding the crests, such as the Agnus Dei, lily, arrow, circle, star, moon, cross, hourglass, and scriptural abbreviations provide another symbolic layer. If the heraldic animals are now interpreted in Christian terms - namely as St. Mark's lion, St. Luke's beast, St. John's eagle, and St. Matthew's man - the prominent depiction of the Madonna in a striking round-arched niche fits seamlessly into the variety of representations. The columns, capitals, multipole entablature, and arcosolium with semi-circular arches are detailed and suggest that Petrilli was influenced by a particular image. Mary and Child wear a plate-shaped halo on the back of their heads; the veiled Mary is depicted seated and giving something into the hand of the seated naked Child Jesus, similar to numerous introspective depictions of the Madonna by Raphael. The Christian content is reinforced by the further depiction of a figure resembling St. George with a halo, galloping his horse over a dragon with sword and shield raised. Inscriptions identify him as Giorgios as well as "Marinus", names associated with the 50th Doge of Venice, namely Marino Zorzi, whose coinage has similar inscriptions. However, the name could also be read as "Mariaus", referring to Gaius Marius, a Roman general and statesman who introduced martial army reforms and was extremely successful. Behind the figure of the knight is a small bust of a woman with a high crown, presumably Mary. Two other representations, though, seem to be more rooted in Greco-Roman antiquity, such as that of Athena, typically dressed in long peplos with aegis and wearing a high helmet with Pegasus and Sphinx, this representation being directly comparable to the so-called Varvakion statuette. This represents a copy of the classical cult image of Athena in the Parthenon on the Acropolis in Athens. The serpent, probably the legendary founder of Athens named Erichthonios, is also comparable to the cult image; however, here the serpent coils around Athena's body and lowers its head onto the offered libation bowl, which Athena holds in front of her in a sacrificial posture. The Nike offered by Athena in the cult image is here on the other side: the scantily clad Nike/Victoria, goddess of victory, is shown waving a peplos, waving a shawl and presenting a palm branch - the symbol for peace. The exceptional representational variety and imaginative synthesis of the different spiritual worlds reveal the artist's wealth of knowledge and the great demand to artfully weave them together at the end of the 19th century.

19TH C. ITALIAN MARBLE WELL HEAD SIGNED PETRILLI

    Est: $6,000 - $9,000

Professor Aristide Petrilli (Italian, 1868-1930) A very fine and exceptionally carved late 19th Century Italian marble wellhead. The Renaissance style wellhead being of cylindrical form having a projecting rim above a continuous frieze of cavorting amorini among grapevines, flowers, and fruit with dancing maidens playing musical instruments as well as various animals. The wellhead is surmounted by a wrought iron superstructure with scroll work. Dimensions overall: Ht: 95.5" Wd: 39.5" Dpth: 38.5" Dimensions of marble wellhead only: Ht: 30" Diameter:38" Dimensions of iron section only Ht: 65.5" x Wd: 39.5" The Italian tradition of fine carved marble wellheads, relief sculpted with light hearted motifs was strongest in the Veneto. The use of frivolous subject matter such as cavorting amorini reflected the nature and use of the wellheads, in that while they were intended to provide one of life's basic necessities -the free supply of clean and healthy water, the object that the wellheads successfully achieved was seen as a luxury and something in which joy and happiness should be derived from As focal points in the central positions of often grand or important squares, it was also apt to create wellheads that were significant aesthetically as well as having a functional purpose. About the Artist: Professor Aristide Petrilli was an Italian sculptor active from the late 1800s to early 1900s, who created the Bacchantes sculpture now stationed in the mall park in Atascadero. Petrilli was born in Tivoli, Lazio, and studied in Florence at the Art Institute and subsequently the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze from 1889-90. He worked with Raffaello Romanelli before establishing his own studio at via Serragli, 152, in Florence. He specialised in romanticized figures of classical and historical themes, often using coloured marbles or bronze or gilt highlights, and is most remembered for his maidens in the Renaissance style. Petrilli's works were exhibited in the Salon of the Soci t des Artistes Fran ais in 1896 . He subsequently exhibited a bust of Joan of Arc at the Paris Exposition Universelle (1900), and Wrestling Bacchantes at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition (St. Louis World's Fair). The Wrestling Bacchantes is now displayed in the Atascadero, California, Sunken Gardens, and several other pieces at the Hearst Castle. His realistic bronze Ritratto di Giacomo Puccini is now in Montevarchi, Italy. It is also reported that in 1924 he created the plaque commemorating the Caduti per la Soc. Sportiva Sempre Avanti in Florence.
