Burled walnut veneered dresser box of rectangular form with silvered hardware and mounts with hinged top with central figural watercolor sketch depicting three winged putti or cherubs in fanciful scene, pencil signed lower right "E. It depicts a dark thunderstorm sky over a shimmering stream and a country way, which reveals the rear view of a woman. Her bright red umbrella seems to act as a flower full of hope amongst the dark tones of the atmospheric mountain scenery. The painting is in good condition considering its age. It is signed and dated lower right ‘L. Petrovits 1860’. There is a small restored area in the upper right corner. The paint surface shows a few tiny scattered losses of material. Inspection under UV light reveals small areas of retouching, especially to the upper parts of the depiction. The stucco frame is in good condition with small traces of age and use. The framed work measures 53.5 x 65 cm and the size of the stretcher is 34.5 x 49 cm. Ladislaus Eugen Petrovits (1839-1907) Ladislaus Eugen Petrovits studied at the Art Academy in Vienna and attended the classes of Franz II Steinfeld (1787-1868) and Albert August Zimmermann (1808-1888). He was active as a landscape and decoration painter and was also successful as an illustrator for newspapers, magazines and books.
