Franz Xaver Andreas Petter (Lichtental, Viena, 1791-1866) Flores del Prado. Gouache sobre papel adherido a lienzo. Firmado y fechado en 1858. Su padre era pintor de porcelana y pretendía que su hijo siguiera la misma profesión, pero Petter desarrolló un interés aún mayor por la pintura. Estudió con Johann Baptist Drechsler en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Viena llegando a ser uno de los bodegonistas más importantes del período Biedermeier en Viena. Se especializó en bodegones florales y más tarde de frutas y paisajes con flores, continuando con las tradiciones de bodegones de flores de la Edad de Oro holandesa. Las obras de Petter fueron muy populares entre la nobleza austríaca. 33 x 30 cm.

Blumenstillleben mit Früchten und Insekten Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 100 x 81 cm. Links unten Restmonogramm. Ungerahmt. In Landschaft vor einem steinernen Sockel ein fein arrangiertes Blumenstillleben mit Rosen, geflammten Tulpen, Spraynelken, Primel und tränendem Herz. Davor am Boden einige Gräser mit gelber Sumpfdotterblume und blauem Vergissmeinnicht sowie am linken Bildrand ein kleines Nest, gefüllt mit Eiern. Am rechten Bildrand weitere grüne Gräser und gelb-weiße Kleinblütler sowie eine Distel, auf denen sich zwei kleine Kohlfalter niedergelassen haben. Im oberen Bildteil ein Sockel mit einem darüber hängendem Zweig eines Rebstocks mit einer hellen Traubenrispe. Ebenso eine dunkle Weintraubenrispe auf der Platte liegend, sowie einige Himbeeren und eine angeschälte Zitrone. Das Bild wird zusätzlich belebt durch ein rechts vor einem braunen Felsenstück fliegendes Tagpfauenauge sowie im unteren Bereich durch eine kleine kriechende Schnecke. Malerei in überwiegend frischen leuchtenden Farbtönen. Berieben, insbesondere am unteren Rand mit kleinen Farbabsplitterungen und kleiner Durchstoßung. (1330015) (18)

Franz Xaver Petter, Flower Still Life with Peaches and Grapes

In the first half of the 19th century, Vienna experienced a boom in flower painting, the origins of which can be traced back to the flourishing of this genre in the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory. The founding figure of this painting style was Johann Baptist Drechsler, the son of a porcelain painter, who worked at the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory in the late 18th century and advanced to become the first professor of flower painting at the Vienna Academy of Arts. One of his most able students was Franz Xaver Petter who, like Drechsler, was also the son of a porcelain painter. Petter first studied at the Academy under Drechsler and later under his successor Sebastian Wegmayr. Petter's artistic career reflects the emancipation of the flower painting genre from the decorative arts since, unlike both his father and Drechsler, Petter no longer painted on porcelain and succeeded as the leading flower painter of the Biedermeier period in Vienna, eventually becoming a professor at the Vienna Academy.

Franz Xaver Petter was the leading artist among the flower painters of the Viennese Biedermeier period, as Gerbert and Marianna Frodl point out: "Petter is (...) the only artist among the known flower painters of Vienna whose portrait has survived (cf. fig. 1), which may be explained by his strong presence in the circles of high society and therefore his fame." (cf. Gerbert and Marianna Frodl: Die Blumenmalerei in Wien. Vienna 2010, p. 66ff). Petter also instructed the Archduchess Maria Henriette in flower painting, and one of his most opulent compositions was presented by Emperor Franz I to the Russian Tzar Nicholas I.

Das Stillleben in den typisch hellleuchtenden Farben der Wiener Malerei der Zeit vorgeführt. Der Blumenstrauß enthält hellrosafarbene Rosen, gefüllte Narzissen, Primeln, Rittersporn, gefiederte Tulpen sowie Mohnblumen, eingestellt in eine Tonvase mit eingezogenem Fuß und antikem Frontrelief. Vase auf einer kräftigen Steinplatte in eine raue, verschattete Niesche eingestellt, aus der die Blüten herausleuchten. Neben dem Fuß der Vase die geöffnete Melone neben Königswinden, hellen und dunkleren Trauben sowie zwei Pfirsichen. In der Bildtradition, die aus den Stillleben Hollands herrührt, hat der Maler hier einen kleinen Falter in der Nieschenkante sowie eine Fliege auf der Melone wiedergegeben.
