Judy Pfaff New York, (b.1946) Untitled, 1993 encaustic and fabric dye on botanical print on paper signed and dated lower right. Biography from the Archives of askART: Judy Pfaff was born in 1946 in London, England. She attended Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, Illinois; and in 1971 got her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Washington University in St.Louis, Missouri. In 1973, she earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut. Pfaff began her career as a painter, studying with Al Held. She has also been a sculptor and has done installation work for twenty-five years. She is married to photographer Rob van Erve. She has been Art Professor and co-chairman of the Art Department at Bard College, Annadale-on-Hudson, New York. The time came when Pfaff proved that she is as comfortable working in two dimensions as she was in three. She focuses now on the tensions between nature and culture. She is making art that seems designed to frustrate any attempts to characterize it. Her swirling, scribbled forms and flashy, set-your-teeth-on-edge colors give ample reason for causing people to pay attention. Judy Pfaff New York, (b. 1946) China, 2006 photogravure, etching, digital, wax Edition of 30 published by Tandem Press. signed lower right, numbered 22/30 lower left. Judy Pfaff was born in 1946 in London, England.
