      Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Charles T. Phelan (American, born 1840) NY City Oil Painting. The oil on wood panel painting depicts Ravenswood, what is now present day Long Island City - New York. The painting depicts a 19th century rural homestead scene in the country - long before it became part of the Metropolitan New York City area. The old Ravenswood area situated along the East River of westernmost Queens, has a long history as part of the Brooklyn Queens Waterfront. The majority of Phelan's works are genre scenes of shepherds with their flock. Phelan was a member of the Brooklyn AA., and a pupil of Frederick Rondel who also taught Winslow Homer. Signed lower left Phelan. Inscribed in pencil on the back of the panel, subject near Ravenswood Long Island. In good condition, there is visible light retouch at the top center near the frame edge.Uv light inspection reveals no other repairs. The painting measures 16 inches high by 24 inches wide. The ornate original Victorian gilt frame measures 30 inches high by 40 inches wide. From AskArt: Charles T. Phelan was born in New York in 1840. Landscape painter and pupil of Frederick Rondel (1826-1892) who was best remembered as the teacher of Winslow Homer. His almost impressionistic style mixed with the luministic approach captured the spontaneity of the moment, like a storm moving toward the front of his canvas. He seems to have been at the cutting edge of what would be called the Modern Movement.

Charles T. Phelan American, b. 1840 A Flock of Sheep Grazing in a Landscape, 1891 Signed Chas. T. Phelan and dated 91 (ll) Oil on canvas 17 1/8 x 27 3/8 inches Unframed Provenance: Private collection Phelan studied with Frederick Rondel, who was also the teacher of Winslow Homer. Sheep became his predominant subject, which he rendered with obsessive attention, creating abstractly composed configurations of variously sized flocks. His work was commended in a New York Times review of the National Academy of Design annual of 1882, which stated that in Phelan's Sheep Drinking, "the touch is broad and just, with a good sense of modeling."
