          Carl Philipp Fohr, Grimsel

          Est: €4,000 - €6,000

Inscribed lower right: Grimsel / Verso Heidelberg 1816 Verso study of a harnessed horse. On 18 October 1816, accompanied by his dog Grimsel, Fohr set off on foot for Rome, where they arrived on 21 November. Grimsel remained his constant companion until Fohr's early death in 1818 and is also depicted in other works by the artist. For example in the drawing "The artist with two friends and his dog Grimsel" from 1816 (Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt, P. Märker, op. cit., p. 557/558) as well as in the drawing "Fohr with his dog Grimsel on the way to Italy" (private collection, P. Märker, op. cit., p. 559), created in the same year. The sketch with the harnessed horse is also comparable in Fohr's drawings, although researchers have dated it somewhat earlier, namely 1813 (P. Märker, op. cit., pp. 139/140).
