Samuel George Phillips (1890 - 1965) Landscape with Classical Ruins. The Artist, Samuel George Phillips studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Art and went on to travel Europe to continue his studies. He is regarded as a fine American oil painter who is known for his paintings of the Delaware river. The scene is set as the sun goes down as the light highlights an expansive horizon in the distance. The main subject focuses on the enormous greenery and ancient remains that have survived on the hill side. Goats and two individuals, one carrying a basket on her head and the other is a man dressed in traditional clothing. The columns of the classical ruins are so intricately painted they almost like a photograph. Large scale oil on canvas. Fine decorative gilt wood frame. Pieces missing from several places on the gilt gesso frame. Signed bottom left corner. Measures: Height 60 Inches; Width 45 Inches; Depth 3.5 Inches.

The relined canvas in overall very good (close to excllent) original condition, with no sign of inpainting as seen under UV light. We do notice some remnants of old varnish, which indicates the painting has been cleaned. With some fluorescence on top of the hills at upper center, which is due to the pigments used by the artist in our opinion, rather than a sign of restoration. See specialist's pictures.

The unlined canvas in overall good condition. With small losses in the upper right quadrant (in the two hills), as well as at bottom center and upper left (in the tree): all relatively minor and rather unobtrusive as the ground color of the canvas is purple, and therefore matches with the overall harmony of the work. With a small puncture line at bottom right near the bottom edge. Examination under UV light does not reveal any sign of inpainting. The canvas might benefit from a light cleaning.

A portrait of Dr. Nina Schall (1881 - 1961), signed at the lower right, with a tag for Newman Galleries, Philadelphia, attached to the frame verso. Dr. Schall was a graduate of Cornell and Johns Hopkins, was on staff at New York Postgraduate Hospital, was an instructor at Hahnemann in Philadelphia, and served as Regent of the Fort Greene (Brooklyn) and Independence Hall (Philadelphia) chapters of the DAR and was president of the DAR Regents Club (New York). The lot includes a photocopied obituary for the sitter.
