AFTER THOMAS PHILLIPS (BRITISH 1770-1845) AFTER THOMAS PHILLIPS (BRITISH 1770-1845) Portrait of Lord Byron in Albanian Dress off-set lithograph 49 x 58 cm Lord Byron was notoriously protective of his image, and directed his publisher John Murray to destroy any engravings of himself that he disliked. One portrait he endorsed was completed in 1813 by the artist Thomas Phillips. It shows Byron wearing Albanian dress, ‘the most magnificent in the world,’ Byron thought, which he had acquired while on a Grand Tour of the Mediterranean in 1809. The portrait alludes to his travels and adventurous spirit while presenting the face of a calm and pensive Byron. Known to be moody, by turns gregarious and then sullen, Byron was a man of extremes, both in terms of his character and his deeds. In a candid moment of self-reflection Byron wrote, ‘I am so changeable, being everything by turns and nothing long, – I am such a strange mélange of good and evil, that it would be difficult to describe me’.

Attributed to Thomas Phillips RA (1770-1845) Attributed to Thomas Phillips RA (1770-1845) Portrait of George Legge, 3rd Earl of Dartmouth, Lord Chamberlain of the Household of George III, seated half-length, in a black coat and holding an agate snuff box oil on canvas 76 x 63cm, unframed A three-quarter-length portrait of the 3rd Earl, seated in an armchair beside a bust, after an original by Phillips, was engraved by Charles Heath in 1814. The artist records two paintings in his sitter book (nos. 288 and 411) for the years 1810 and 1815. Condition Report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. There is water staining on the reverse of the painting which may account for some of the structural issues discussed below. The lining canvas is failing at the right edge with the original canvas coming away. There are also small tears beginning to form in the tacking edges. In the area of the sitter's right shoulder there is blistering in the paint layer leading to paint losses. There are also losses and areas of vulnerable paint along the lower edge. There are localised retouchings in the sitter's face and background covering drying cracks which are well matched to the original. The varnish has been affected by moisture leading to blooming across the surface. The varnish has become yellow as it has aged and dull. There is a layer of surface dust on the front and reverse of the painting.

Thomas Phillips (British, 1770-1845), Attributed Portrait of a Lady oil on canvas sight: 35 1/2 x 27 1/2 inches. Thomas Phillips (1770-1845) Phillips was born into a prosperous mercantile family in Dudley, Worcestershire, England. As a young man he is thought to have had some instruction with Francis Eginton before being apprenticed to a glass painter in Birmingham. In 1790, the skills he displayed in that line of work lead to his selection by Sir Benjamin West to work as an assistant in the completion of the series of painted glass windows that artist was installing at Windsor Castle, under the patronage of King George III. Thereafter he worked with West, painting history pictures and allegories which were exhibited at the Royal Academy. By 1796 he had turned exclusively to painting portraits, the genre by which he would be best known. He was elected an associate of the Royal Academy in 1804 and a full associate in 1808. In recognition of that honor he painted a full-length portrait of Academician John Singleton Copley, West’s great rival, in his robes as a peer of the realm. As the days of West and Sir Joshua Reynolds came to a close Phillips, together with Sir Thomas Lawrence, became one of the most fashionable painters of the day. He developed a specialty in painting writers and artists “considering both to represent the creativity of the Romantic period.” (National Portrait Gallery, London, website; npg.org.uk/Thomas Phillips) Among his best-known works were portraits of Lord Byron in exotic middle-eastern dress and William Blake in a brooding mood. This portrait bears a striking resemblance to Charlotte Bronte. Many of these works were commissioned by the printer John Murray and issued as popular engravings. Phillips became Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy in 1825, a post he held until 1832. Notes from his lectures were published by John Murray in 1833, under the title Lectures on the History and Principles of Painting. Like Benjamin West, Phillips was known as a kindly man who encouraged his students and supported his fellow artists in old age. He was a founder of the Artist’s Benevolent Society.

        Feb. 22, 2020

Sir Thomas Phillips (English, 1770-1845), Portrait of a Child, with Cincinnati Albee Theatre Provenance

        Est: $8,000 - $12,000

A grandiose oil on canvas, full-length portrait of a child wearing a red dress, among a landscape background. With plaque on frame; 54.75" x 32" (sight) and 64" x 41.5" (framed). Provenance: Albee collection From whom acquired by Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence By descent to the present owner At a cost of $4 million, the Albee Theatre was considered Cincinnati's finest movie palace. Opened on December 24, 1927, this Thomas Lamb palace was named after its builder, E. F. Albee, noted vaudeville theater owner and a relative of famous playwright Edward Albee. It was torn down in 1977 and a hotel was constructed in its place. Some portions of the theater were saved and are now located in other buildings including Music Hall and the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. Thomas Phillips was born in Dudley, Warwickshire, on 18 October 1770, of well-to-do parents. After an apprenticeship with Francis Eginton, a Birmingham glass painter, he came to London in 1790 with an introduction to Benjamin West, who employed him on his painted-glass windows for Saint George's Chapel, Windsor. Phillips entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1791. His first exhibits at the Royal Academy, between 1792 and 1794, were a view of Windsor Castle and history, religious, and mythological pictures, but he subsequently specialized in portraiture. After a period of comparative obscurity in an age dominated by Lawrence, Hoppner, and Beechey, Phillips was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1804 and a full Academician in 1808. From about 1804 until his death he lived on George Street, Hanover Square. He married Elizabeth Fraser of Fairfield, near Inverness. In 1825 Phillips was elected professor of painting at the Royal Academy in succession to Henry Fuseli. He held this post until 1832, and, in order to qualify himself for his duties, visited Italy, where he traveled in the company of William Hilton and Sir David Wilkie. His Lectures on the History and Principles of Painting were published in 1833. A man of wide learning, he was a Fellow of the Royal Society and of the Society of Antiquaries. He is best known for his portraits of scientists and literary figures, many of the latter painted for John Murray, the publisher. He died in London on 20 April 1845.[Hayes, John.
