He attended Bourne College and the Municipal School of Art in Birmingham, committing to artistry after a stint as an assistant instructor and a traveling experience in South Africa. Walter Joseph Phillips' artist career first explored sketching and resulted in exhibits alongside other artists, and he later began making woodcut prints.

The artist and his family spent a year in England while he studied woodcut techniques.
