Walter Joseph Phillips Sold at Auction Prices

Wood cutter, Water color painter, Etcher, b. 1884 - d. 1963

Artist Walter Joseph Phillips was born in England but spent formative periods of his career in Canada. He attended Bourne College and the Municipal School of Art in Birmingham, committing to artistry after a stint as an assistant instructor and a traveling experience in South Africa. Walter Joseph Phillips' artist career first explored sketching and resulted in exhibits alongside other artists, and he later began making woodcut prints.

The artist and his family spent a year in England while he studied woodcut techniques. He taught at various art schools, writing a manual on woodcutting techniques and providing a significant influence on younger artists. Walter Joseph Phillips' prints and artwork for sale showcase his aptitude for small-scale details in both watercolors and woodcuts. His most famous paintings and woodcut prints include nature scenes set in Manitoba. Find Canadian woodcut prints for sale at Invaluable.

  • Walter J. Phillips (1884-1963) Canadian, Woodblock
    Jun. 08, 2024

Walter J. Phillips (1884-1963) Canadian, Woodblock

    Est: $200 - $400

Walter Joseph Phillips (1884-1963) Canadian, Color Woodblock. Signed bottom right, titled "Red River Road" bottom left. Depicts a road curving along a slip of land between two bodies of water with a small village in the distance. Overall size: 15 1/4 X 14 5/8 in. Sight size: 8 1/4 X 8 1/4 in. #1568. Walter Joseph Phillips was born 1884 at Barton-on-Humber in Lincolnshire, England, the son of Reverend John Phillips, a Methodist minister. In his teens he attended the Birmingham School of Art, studying under Edward R. Taylor. In 1908 he was hired as Art Master at Bishop Woodworth School in Salisbury. In 1910 he married Gladys Pitcher and immigrated to Winnipeg, Canada. Purchasing etching tools and taking lessons from local artists, he began producing etchings in very small editions in 1915, subsequently switching to color woodcut prints. During the summers of 1917 and 1919 Phillips taught at the University of Wisconsin, and by 1928 he had produced eighty-one woodcuts. His pattern of making woodcuts became very recognizable and highly sought-after: a graphite sketch followed by a finished watercolor, another sketch to compose the woodcut, and then the final print. From 1925 to 1946 his subjects were primarily the Prairies and the Rocky Mountains. In 1941 he became an instructor at the Institute of Technology and Art in Calgary, where he stayed until 1949. In 1958 Phillips’ eyesight began failing and he retired to Victoria, where he died in 1963. Location Box 3

    WALTER J. PHILLIPS Morning.

    Est: $1,500 - $2,500

WALTER J. PHILLIPS Morning. Color woodcut, 1924. 183x195 mm; 7⅛x7⅝ inches, wide margins. Signed, titled and numbered 13/150 in pencil, lower margin. A very good impression. Phillips (1884-1963) is known for popularizing the color woodcut in Canada. Born in England, he studied at the Birmingham School of Art and lived abroad in South Africa and Paris before moving to Canada in 1913, settling in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He befriended the English artist Cyril H. Barraud (1877-1965) who introduced him to printmaking, particularly etching. In 1917, Phillips began to teach himself color woodcut printmaking, which brought him commercial success. In the 1920s and 1930s he was Canada's most famous printmaker and exhibited internationally. Throughout his career he produced over 200 prints. In 1933, he was made a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. In 1940, he became the resident artist at the Banff Centre, then known as the Banff School of Fine Arts, where he played an important role in the development of their visual arts program. Boulet 75.

    Walter Joseph Phillips (1884 - 1963) Canadian

    Est: $1,500 - $2,500

Walter Joseph Phillips (1887 - 1963) Watercolor on Paper, Signed, Measures (11.5 x 15.5 inches) w/frame (18 x 22 inches) Walter Joseph Phillips was born 1884 at Barton-on-Humber in Lincolnshire, England, the son of Reverend John Phillips, a Methodist minister. In his teens, he attended the Birmingham School of Art once a week, studying under Edward R. Taylor. He went to South Africa for a few years in the hope of earning enough money there to be able to study art in Paris, but returned with little more than he left with. By 1908, he had worked as a commercial artist in Manchester and London, then from 1908 to 1911 served as art master at Bishop Woodworth School in Salisbury, England. In 1911, he held his first solo show in Salisbury which was both critically and financially successful. Eventually, he and his wife Gladys Pitcher, whom he had married in December 1910, decided to emigrate to Canada, arriving in Winnipeg in June, 1913.
