          Mar. 08, 2022

Long Jack Phillipus Tjakamarra - Possum Dreaming, 1972

          Est: $30,000 - $50,000

67 x 49 cm, 76 x 58 cm (framed) Long Jack Phillipus was an instrumental member of the group involved in creating the famous mural that marked the beginning of the contemporary Western Desert art movement. He participated in the secret discussions amongst the senior law men and later told Bardon that the Honey Ant design was a gift, ‘given to the white man’s school’ by ceremonial leaders of the Aboriginal people.  As school yardsman, he prepared the walls with cement rendering and coats of white primer and then later assisted Kaapa Tjampitjinpa and Billy Stockman Tjapaltjarri in the mural painting itself. Long Jack’s work was some of the first to sell in Alice Springs, spurring the other men on in their efforts and commitment. He was the owner of the principal Possum Dreaming site in the Gibson Desert, Ngamarunya, which featured strongly as a subject of his art. His painting style appealed to the public with its symmetrical balance and stylised figurative elements. While he leaned towards a softer, slightly more decorative approach, by using the traditional earth colours in more harmonious ways than a number of the other men, he still achieved the striking effects that first grabbed the attention of the Australian art world during the early years of the art movement. Long Jack helped Bardon to comprehend the important issue of tribal and personal custody of Dreamings. He also took a lead in stepping away from problematic subjects with his paintings of the Kadaitcha Dreaming 1972, the feared and invisible spirit who punishes wayward children, and many Water Dreamings which tell of the wondrous, life-giving effects of rain in the desert. During the early 1970’s Long Jack served on the Aboriginal Arts Board of the Australia Council and created some of Papunya Tula’s largest early canvases for the board’s overseas exhibition program. In this very early Possum Dreaming work the curving line with tracks are the long journeys of the possum spirit men, the oval shapes are shields decorated with possum markings, and the oblique bands represent body paint on the corroboree performers.

It was in this darkened space, excised at the eastern end of the Papunya Town Hall, where new elements coalesced with ancient iconography to become Western Desert art. Phillipus grew up in the bush before coming into Haasts Bluff as a teenager. He was equally at home with Ngaliya/Warlpiri artists, such as Kaapa Tjampitjinpa, as he was with his Pintupi classificatory uncle, Uta Uta Tjangala. The symmetrical composition, and painted ‘frame’ of Mala (Spinifex Wallaby) suggests Kaapa’s strong influence. Mala (Spinifex Wallaby) encapsulates an episode on the ceremonial ground. The bipedal tracks of the Mala, ‘hopping’ from the periphery to the centre, conveys the paths of the performers, their slowing gait evident from the marks left by their ‘tails’, and the impressions made by their front ‘paws’. The central roundel represents the epicentre of the ceremony. The performers are inferred by the presence of their body paint, extending in bands from the stomach, up their chests and over the shoulders. Similar figures, at the top and bottom, are visualised with bullroarers, (attached on taut strings). The uncanny thrum created by bullroarers is intended to forewarn the uninitiated to remain clear of the proscribed area. The large ovals in each quadrant are likely to represent the areas in which post-initiate novices are held, while learning the songs, designs and dances associated with the Mala ceremonies. Mala (Spinifex Wallaby) was created before the controversy that erupted at the Yuendumu sports weekend in August 1972. The cause of the outcry was a group of Papunya paintings, which included restricted ceremonial detail, on public display. This painting’s candid intent is evident from the clarity and specificity of its individual elements. The unadorned black background that distinguishes such early works is also distinct. Later, the iconography would become more cryptic and enmeshed in dotted fields. The current work was produced at a unique moment when the language of Papunya painting was still at play. JOHN KEAN

Big Kangaroo Ceremonial Dreaming, 1971 in Bardon, G., and Bardon, J., Papunya, A Place Made After the Story: The Beginnings of the Western Desert Painting Movement, The Miegunyah Press, Melbourne, 2004, painting 129, p. 220 (illus.) ESSAY: A resident of Papunya, Long Jack Phillipus Tjakamarra is one of the men credited with founding the Western Desert art movement. His oeuvre encompasses the evolution of desert painting from the initial representational depictions of ceremonial events on board to the creation of grand canvases that echo the scale of traditional ground mosaics. In the winter of 1971, Long Jack Phillipus was among those men who painted the Honey Ant Mural on the north-facing wall of the Papunya School. The convergence of Honey Ant ancestors from north, east, south and west at Papunya, was selected as the theme for the mural, for it showed that men from distinct language groups could work together on a common project and the education of their children.1 At the same time in August 1971, Kaapa Tjampitjinpa won the Caltex Art Award in Alice Springs. The prize money he received inspired other men, including Phillipus, to take up the brush—the award being a potent demonstration that knowledge of inherited culture could provide a platform for gaining financial independence. Kaapa was the leader of the painting movement at Papunya during its first fragile years and his early works, such as the prize-winning Men’s Ceremony for the Kangaroo, Gulgardi, 1971, in the collection of the Araluen Arts Centre, established conventions that other artists subsequently emulated. In a period of experimentation and great excitement, representational works such as Long Jack Phillipus Tjakamarra’s Hunting, 1971, comprise a rare subset within the now famous boards that were created during Geoffrey Bardon’s tenure as art teacher at Papunya. Historian Vivien Johnson has astutely characterised this subset as belonging to the ‘School of Kaapa’.2 Always controversial for the revelation of restricted aspects of men’s ceremonial life, these paintings provide a vivid snapshot of the ceremonies that informed subsequent, more encrypted paintings on canvas.3 The work on offer, Hunting, is a powerful example of the ‘School of Kaapa’. It shows two men kneeling and painting for ceremony. Objects that affirm their manhood surround the men: boomerangs, stone knives, spear throwers and spears. The inclusion of kutitji (softwood shields) could provide a clue to the precise ancestors that Phillipus envisioned, for ‘hunting’ is a generic title that does not capture the complexity of the scene portrayed. The presence of bullroarers suggests the gravity of the ceremony, while the large oval ceremonial objects, that appear to float above the hardened earth of the corroboree ground also emphasise the seriousness of the subject. Hunting is among the finest of the ‘School of Kaapa’ productions with its austere black background upon which each object is exquisitely detailed. Featuring a combination of perspectival and planar view, at a different scale of resolution, it is a beguiling, almost symmetrical representation, providing a rare window into the aesthetics of ceremonial practice.
