        Est: $100 - $150

George Gardner Phipps (1838-1925) "Seascape" watercolor and gouache Signed lower left. George Gardner Phipps was a minister in Newton Highlands, Massachusetts. AskART reproduces a statement from Phipp's friend Edith Cobb Allen which reads: "George Phipps was a bouncy, alert, smiling little man; his wife was a large, expansive, capable woman who loved him devotedly... He was truly a pastor, in every sense of the word... He was able to actively use his sensitive talent for water-color painting; he captured many lovely scenes of the wooded hills of Newton, and of the unmatchable bends of the dear Charles River. His wedding gift to me was an especially-loved bend of the Charles, above Newton Upper Falls... I can see him now, a jaunty little figure, walking along the shaded side-walk of Lincoln St., Newton Highlands, the portfolio of water colors under his arm; he either sold of gave them - it seems to make little difference to him, just so they gave pleasure. That is my memory of dear George Phipps - always eager to give pleasure." Sight image 7 1/2" H x 14 3/4" W, framed.
