Picabia’s late oeuvre, created during and after World War II (1933–1953), is still considered provocative to this day. Alongside the sharp-edged female nudes, which were mainly executed in the early 1940s, enigmatic figures and compositions cover his canvases in a formal language that is neither immediately comprehensible in its origin nor in its expression – and precisely because of this, it remains so fascinating. Thálatta! Thálatta! (“The Sea! The Sea!” in ancient Greek) was the cry of joy when the roaming Ten Thousand Greeks gazed upon the Black Sea from Mount Theches, after having participated in the failed march of Cyrus the Younger against the Persian Empire in 401 A.D. In Greek mythology, “Thalassa” refers to one of the primordial gods of creation and, according to Hyginus, is the daughter of Aither (Sky) and Hemera (Day). Within the Greek pantheon, she holds an important place as the goddess of seas and oceans. Her dominion extends over the unfathomable depths and raging waters. She is worshipped as the protector of sailors, fishermen, and all those dependent on the sea’s resources, and she possesses the power to control tides, storms, and ocean currents. Regardless of her origin, she embodies the force of the primal waters, the source of all cosmic manifestation on Earth, for everything underlying the universe found its nourishment and home in the sea, from which terrestrial life eventually emerged. In some depictions, she appears in a transparent veil of water; later, she is shown with crab-like pincers and horns in her hair. However, no specific form can be definitively assigned to her, for her shape and body are elemental – like the sea itself.

              Nov. 12, 2024

FRANCIS PICABIA (Paris, 1879-1953). "Two models", 1920. Ink and watercolor on paper.

              Est: €18,000 - €22,000

FRANCIS PICABIA (Paris, 1879-1953). "Two models", 1920. Ink and watercolor on paper. Measurements: 33 x 20 cm; 51 x 38 cm (frame). Provenance: Godia Collection, Barcelona. Artur Ramon Gallery, Barcelona. Francis Picabia was a French avant-garde painter, poet and typographer. After experimenting with Impressionism and Pointillism, Picabia became associated with Cubism. His highly abstract flat compositions were colorful and rich in hallmarks. He was one of the first important figures of the Dada movement in the United States and France. He later became briefly associated with Surrealism, but would soon turn his back on the art establishment. Early in his career, from 1903 to 1908, Picabia was influenced by the Impressionist paintings of Alfred Sisley. From 1909, he came under the influence of the Cubists who would later form the Golden Section (Section d'Or). Picabia was the only member of the Cubist group to personally attend the Armory Show in New York, thus getting Alfred Stieglitz to facilitate a solo exhibition, Francis Picabia's New York Studies exhibition, at his gallery 291 (formerly Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession).Picabia traveled to New York City several times and was active in the avant-garde movements, introducing modern art to America. In 1922, André Breton relaunched the magazine Littérature with cover images by Picabia, whom he gave carte blanche for each issue. 1925, Picabia returned to figurative painting, and during the 1930s he became a close friend of the modernist novelist Gertrude Stein. In the early 1940s he moved to the south of France, where his work took a surprising turn: he produced a series of paintings based on nude glamour photos in French "girlie" magazines such as Paris Sex-Appeal.Before the end of World War II, he returned to Paris, where he resumed abstract painting and writing poetry. Today his works are in important private and public collections. Highlights include the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Tate Gallery, London; the Musée National d'Art Moderne, Paris; and Museum de Fundatie, Zwolle, The Netherlands.

              Est: €60,000 - €80,000

CHEMIN DES SABLONS À MORET, 1904 Öl auf Leinwand. 46,5 x 55 cm. Rechts unten signiert und datiert „1904“. Verso Titelbezeichnung auf dem Keilrahmen. Gerahmt. A.R. Note: Pentimenti reveal that this Provençal landscape is painted over a transparence involving two superimposed heads, probably of circa 1936 In the dreamlike tableaux of the transparencies, Picabia referenced visual sources ranging from ancient Rome to the Renaissance, often juxtaposing the sacred with the profane. These works draw on mythology, religion, and conventions of beauty and, in their blending of the unexpected, project a distinctly Surrealist sensibility. As much as they reflect the traditional world, however, they also mirror modern times: indeed, Picabia derived his simultaneous, nonhierarchical use of images from his experiments in film, especially his 1924 masterpiece with René Clair, Entr’acte. “These transparencies with their corner of oubliettes permit me to express for myself the resemblance of my interior desires ...I want a painting where all my instincts may have a free course.” Francis Picabia, Preface to Galcric Leonce Rosenberg, Exposition Francis Picabia, Paris, December 9–31, 1930

(Catalogue Raisonné, Bd. III, 1927–1939, Brussels 2019, p. 270) Girod lists “Silene” as the common name for the butterfly “Proserpinus proserpina“, the crepuscular evening primrose hawk-moth. The body of the butterfly is sage-green, its serrated inner wings glow a delicate yellow-orange. Its name comes from its favourite food: the evening primrose. Its bright yellow flowers open in the evening and they begin to fade the next morning, when the sun shines. The Greek philosopher and natural scientist Theophrastus (372–287 BC), a student of Aristotle, determined the generic name of the evening primrose, but the meaning and historical origin of the plant‘s name remains largely unknown. In ancient Greece, evening primrose plants were a popular snack that accompanied wine. According to ancient tradition, the evening primrose was able to tame wild animals if moistened with wine. A distinction must be made here between the individual “Silenos”, an old and usually drunken man with comical features who was regarded as Dionysus‘s tutor, and the Sileni who were part of Dionysus‘s swarming entourage alongside the nymphs. Picabia‘s Silene is composed of three transparent overlapping layers, her head placed proportionally to the unfolding chalice-shaped flower – her gracefully drawn brows and gentle eyes render her perhaps the embodied reincarnation of this connection.
