Richard Pickersgill (fl. 1818-1853), Naval Battle

    Est: $200 - $400

Richard Pickersgill (fl. 1818-1853), Naval Battle "The Loss of the Kent," watercolor on paper, signed "R.P." lower right, depicts the doomed East Indiaman being devoured by flames on March 1, 1825. Presented behind a mat in a 20th century giltwood frame. Sheet 6.75 x 9.74 in.; DOA 14.25 16.5 in. The mat carries an imprint stating this work was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1825. This is likely correct in that the Kent's demise took 81 lives and was a newsworthy event commemorated by several English artists.
