Helen V Piddington serigraph, Untitled mountains 1983

    Est: $600 - $800

Scarce serigraph by Canadian woman artist, Helen Piddington, Untitled 1983 edition 4/30 Helen Vivian Piddington (Canadian 1931 - ) The Piddingtons arrived in Esquimalt, Victoria from Quebec in 1924, and soon after, in 1931, welcomed their 10th and last child, Helen Vivian Piddington. The family settled into a life that in many ways typified well-off Victoria families of the period; the household boasted a governess, a nanny, a housemaid, a cook and a gardener and occupied an imposing home designed by Victoria's favourite residential architect, Samuel Maclure. Then, during the 1930s, the Piddington's life of privileged comfort vanished thanks to the Great Depression and Major Piddington's bad luck in business. From then on the elder Piddingtons were forced to look after their vast brood themselves, her father growing their food and her mother belatedly learning to cook. Piddington studied at Art at UBC and the L'Académie de la Grande Chaumiére in Paris and has shown her work around the world. She is a renowned BC printmaker and artist who established and directed the Printmaker’s Workshop in West Vancouver until 1975.

In 1975, Piddington moved with her husband and first daughter to Loughborough Inlet in the 1975 and has lived there ever since. Her book, The Inlet, chronicles their early life struggles homesteading in the inlet. Helen Piddington is the author of two autobiographies, The Inlet and Rumble Seat, (Harbour Publishing).
