Markus Pierson (Born 1961) "Coyote" Acrylic Paint On Wood Sculpture. Limited edition numbered 39/95. Markus Pierson was born in 1961 and raised in the small farming town of Grand Ledge, Michigan, where his father owned a popular restaurant. A self-proclaimed reckless “racer”, Markus was the youngest and most challenging of the four Pierson children. The Coyote Series was born in June of 1986, after Markus heard the Joni Mitchell song, “Coyote.” He loved it, played it often and memorized the words. The focus of the song, a guy referred to as “Coyote,” is a reckless, footloose Casanova type fellow – Pierson aspired to be the carefree romancer described in those lyrics. In the decades that followed, Pierson’s work has evolved to include a vast array of paintings, drawings, sculpture, hand-pulled serigraphs and original found-object works. Over time, the metaphor of the Coyote has taken on a more poignant and profound purpose. At its essence, the work urges us to pursue our dreams, wear our hearts on our sleeves, and to celebrate all of life’s ups and downs. PIERSON, Markus (American, b. 1961). Dr. Hey. 1988. Acrylic wooden sculpture. One of 250 copies (#68) signed by Pierson on the back of the piano. Painted coyote pianist, piano, ashtray with cigarette, glass and bottle, all on painted checkerboard dance floor. 16 x 16 x 16”. Coyote’s left arm skillfully re-attached and painted after a break. Good condition. Pierson was inspired by Joni Mitchell’s song, Coyote, and has made coyotes one of his main themes in his artwork.

MARKUS PIERSON (American b. 1961) A SCULPTURE, "On the Road to Her," 1990, acrylic on wood sculpture, signed, dated and numbered on the base, "MP/ 204/350/ ©1990." Height: 31 1/2'' Width: 13'' Depth: 14'' Note: Markus Pierson was working as a bookkeeper when he suffered from a near-fatal bout of Crohn's Disease in 1985. While recovering in the hospital, "I told everyone I knew that the bookkeeper was dead after all - but in his place was a man who was going to become a successful artist. They thought I was nuts. I wasn't." Pierson began working hard as an artist and one of his first successful endeavors was the Coyote Series from which this piece comes. The works were inspired by the Joni Mitchell song "Coyote," about a "footloose Casanova type." When asked his favorite thing about coyotes Pierson said, "They celebrate life. Sometimes life kicks them around, but they embrace it just the same. Heartaches, bad breaks, job problems, job triumphs, true love, rotten luck, vast fortune. Good or bad, they celebrate."
