As a painter associated with the post-war avant-garde, Piesen often explored the metaphysical dimensions of existence through abstract forms and textures. In this work, he focuses on the concept of "non-existence" by creating a surface that oscillates between materiality and immateriality. The densely textured surface of the painting, with its dark, almost monochromatic palette, evokes a sense of depth and infinity, which encourages the viewer to contemplate the void or space beyond the boundary of tangible reality. The use of color and texture in this work is typical of Piesen's technique, where the process of creation becomes a meditation on the essence of existence itself. Robert Piesen was one of the artists who experienced the horrors of war and carried its traces in himself throughout all his life. Still, he was able to create poetic dream compositions that evoke foreign landscapes. In the early 1960s, Robert Piesen was influenced by the flow of non-figurative abstract creation, which became prevalent among many artists at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s.
