Robert Pilot for Sampson-Matthews, Skating Dufferin Terrace

          Est: $500 - $700

Though included in the first exhibition of paintings by the Group of Seven in 1920 and invited to be a member, Robert Pilot was one of three artists who declined to join the group upon its formation. As can be seen in ”Skating, Dufferin Terrace” (1947-1953), Pilot shared many stylistic similarities with the Group of Seven artists, if not their fascination with the untouched wilderness. Built by Lord Dufferin, the Governor of Canada from 1872 to 1878, Dufferin Terrace overlooks the St. Lawrence River beside the Château Frontenac and offers tourists to Quebec City one of the most popular attractions. In this work, Pilot captures a timeless and joyous winter afternoon of Canadian-style recreation.

Robert Wakeham Pilot, Untitled (Harbour Scene), (Sampson Matthews Silkscreen)

          Est: $600 - $900

Born in St. John's, Newfoundland, Robert Pilot moved to Montreal in 1910 when his widowed mother married well-known Canadian artist Maurice Cullen. Pilot found he was attracted to the artistic life as he helped his stepfather with chores in the studio and began sketching. He studied figure drawing at the Royal Canadian Academy and learned landscape painting with Cullen. As a student at the Art Association of Montreal, he was recognized as a gifted pupil by instructor William Brymner, who offered instruction to the penniless young artist free of charge on the condition that he would pay the fees when he was able. After serving overseas in WWI he returned to Montreal and was invited to participate in the first Group of Seven exhibition in 1920. For a time he concentrated on the etching medium, with the desire to develop his own style apart from that of his stepfather. He was given the opportunity to study in Paris with the help of a generous patron and travelled to Paris in 1920. There he studied at the Academie Julian and exhibited in the Paris Salon in 1922. On his return to Canada he was elected an associate of the Royal Canadian Academy. Exhibiting with the RCA gave him more visibility and some of his works were acquired by the National Gallery of Canada. After several successful exhibitions he travelled abroad painting in France, Spain, and North Africa. In addition to oil paintings and etchings he worked in pastel and completed several mural commissions in public buildings. More successful shows followed and he continued to paint, although he served his country once again in WW2. His Canadian impressionist painting style was shaped by his years in France, the influence of his stepfather, Maurice Cullen, and the work of J. W. Morrice, whom he greatly admired. He was elected president of the Royal Canadian Academy in 1952. Pilot died in 1967 and was honored with a retrospective exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 1969.

Pilot Exhibition, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, November 1 - December 6, 1968, (also exhibited at the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa and the Art Gallery of Hamilton), no. 33.Robert Pilot (1898-1967) was a Canadian Impressionist painter whose chief influences were his stepfather Maurice Cullen, with whom he painted as a young man, and James Wilson Morrice, whose work he greatly admired. After studying at the Art Association of Montreal with William Brymner, he attended the Académie Julian in Paris from 1920 to 1922. Back in Canada, Pilot was elected an associate of the Royal Canadian Academy in 1925. His diploma work, deposited with the RCA in 1935, is entitled Twilight, Lévis, 1933. Pilot’s most characteristic works were moody winter landscapes in Quebec (see also lot 49). Mullet River was painted north of Montreal in the Laurentians, an area he knew well. Using a restricted palette of white, blue and silvery brown, Pilot captured the atmosphere of the spring thaw with the rush of running water and the distant trees awakening with new growth when winter finally releases its icy grip on the land.Estimate: $15,000–20,000

ROBERT WAKEHAM PILOT, P.R.C.A.PLACE D’ARMES, QUE.oil on canvassigned 22 ins x 28.25 ins; 54.6 cms x 69.9 cms Provenance:Acquired directly from the artistPrivate Collection, Toronto (by descent through the family)Robert Pilot (1898-1967) was the heir apparent of Impressionist painting in Quebec. Born in Newfoundland, his stepfather, and Father of Canadian Impressionism, Maurice Cullen, was the indisputable towering figure of Quebec art at the turn of the century. Pilot apprenticed in Cullen’s Montreal studio. Additionally, he was befriended, supported and schooled by William Brymner at the Royal Canadian Academy and received subsequent training at the Art Association of Montreal. Pilot enlisted and served in the army from 1916-1919. Upon his return he re-enrolled in Brymner’s classes. Thus, he developed an unwavering commitment to the subject matter as well as the stylistic attributes that their art stood for. Pilot must have been both a precocious as well as a highly touted student. Just months later, it was Pilot, not Brymner or Cullen to whom the honour was extended, alongside two other Montrealers, Randolph S. Hewton and Albert Robinson to exhibit as guests in the historically significant inaugural exhibition of the Group of Seven at the Art Gallery of Toronto in May 1920. No doubt, Edwin Holgate and A.Y. Jackson had a hand in making these recommendations. Unquestionably this was an auspicious start for the young artist. He had been identified as a significant contributor to the new school of Canadian landscape painting. However, rather than remain in Canada to evolve these prospects he readily accepted financial backing to study in Paris for two years (1920-1922). Back in Quebec, he exhibited his 1925 masterwork Quebec from Lévis at the Royal Canadian Academy exhibition. It was purchased by the National Gallery of Canada and subsequently earned him the distinction of being named an Associate of the Royal Canadian Academy of Art. He was elected President of the Royal Canadian Academy 1952-1953 and also elected to the National Academy of Design in the U.S.A. Pilot lived a long, productive life. He was a principal art instructor in Montreal throughout the periods that issued forth the Beaver Hall Group, The Canadian Group of Painters, the Automatistes, Prisme d’Yeux, and Les Plasticiens.Estimate: $90,000–120,000

This is a breathtaking view. Dangerous river rapids are represented by an onslaught of clashing vivid browns, blues and whites. The background echoes the colour patterns and textures of the turbulent water albeit with a slightly reduced intensity but with enough vigour to assert its presence.Estimate: $10,000–15,000

ROBERT WAKEHAM PILOT, P.R.C.A.BAIE ST. PAULoil on boardsigned 12.5 ins x 17 ins; 30.5 cms x 40.6 cms Provenance:Kastel Gallery, Montreal Private Collection, TorontoRobert Pilot (1898-1967) was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland but was raised in Montreal by his mother and stepfather, Maurice Cullen, the father of Canadian Impressionism. Pilot served as Cullen’s studio assistant before receiving formal training. Like many of his contemporaries, Pilot studied art in Europe and was influenced by the innovative stylistic approach of the Impressionists.Baie St. Paul is located in the Charlevoix region of Quebec and has been a beloved sketching location frequented regularly by artists including A.Y. Jackson, Randolph Hewton, Albert H. Robinson, and Clarence Gagnon.Pilot’s successful depiction encompassing a broad expanse of the land and the mighty St. Lawrence beyond is a testament to his efficacy. The painting only measures 12 1/2 by 17 inches. While Pilot packs in the detail he does so deftly. He has no need to resort to compositional grandiloquence; it was simply not in his nature. Consider, nonetheless, the detail he does include: an ice floe calfing from the edge of the shoreline in the foreground, the barely imperceptible boats and houses placed along the distant shores or the horizon line. Though executed in accordance with the conventions of his artistic circle, this work attests to Pilot’s keen observational skill and suggests a sensitivity to the local atmosphere as can only be felt by a native son. Estimate: $8,000–12,000

Prakash notes: “In 1925 (Robert Pilot) was elected an associate member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. William Watson, then Montreal’s foremost art dealer, agreed to represent him and gave him the first of many solo exhibitions at his gallery in 1927.” While this work is not dated, it bears a label from the Watson Gallery that would date it to circa 1927, the year of Pilot’s inaugural solo exhibition. It reads: “The present exhibition is Mr. Pilot’s first one-man show... we feel sure the discerning picture-lover will appreciate a distinctive Canadian atmosphere in these works and will conclude that here is a young artist who, in the parlance of the studio, has certainly ‘arrived’.” Watson also references the one-man exhibition he gave Pilot in 1927 in his memoirs.

Parsons, Maurice Cullen and His Circle, National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, 2009, page 15.Note:One of Pilot’s most important artistic influences was his stepfather, Maurice Cullen. As a child, he often spent time sketching in Cullen’s Montreal studio and when he was thirteen, confessed to Cullen his dream of becoming a painter. After some consideration, Cullen responded: “Well, you won’t make any money but you’ll have a happy life.” Like Cullen, Pilot also trained in Paris, but unlike his stepfather he developed a much brighter, vividly-coloured palette. His landscapes often feature daring strokes of undiluted orange, blue, and green, perfectly captured in Farm in Autumn.
