(Map - Southern England, English Channel) [Untitled - Map VII and VIII of the Spanish Armada in the English Channel]

          Est: $325 - $400

Southern England, English Channel. John Pine, [Untitled - Map VII and VIII of the Spanish Armada in the English Channel], from The Tapestry Hangings of the House of Lords, 1739 (dated). Black & White. This striking sheet depicts the English fleet pursuing the Spanish past Portsmouth to Dover during the British defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. This sheet is part of a set of engraved reproductions of tapestries that had hung in the House of Lords, each depicting maps and views of the battle during different stages of the fight. The defeat of the Spanish Armada was the largest engagement of the undeclared Anglo-Spanish War, and represented a defining moment of Elizabeth I's reign. The original tapestries were commissioned by Lord Howard of Effingham, who had led the English fleet against the Armada, and were based on drawings by the British artist Robert Adams. Hendrik Cornelius Vroom (c. 1563-1640) used the drawings to create the designs for the tapestries. Howard sold the tapestries to King James I in 1616, and they hung in the House of Lords from 1650 until they were destroyed in a fire in 1834. John Pine had the foresight to create engraved reproductions of the tapestries in 1739, collaborating with Hubert-François Gravelot on the drawings. The maps were engraved and printed separately from the outer baroque border, with the maps printed in blue ink and the border printed in black ink.

The Tapestry Hangings of the House of Lords, representing the several Engagements between the English and Spanish Fleets in the memorable year MDLXXXVIII. John Pine (1690-1756). London: John Pine, 1739. Folio (21 4/8 x 12 4/8 inches). Engraved title-page, printed dedication, 2-page list of Subscribers, 24 pages of text, 5 double-page engraved charts, double-page map, and 10 double-page engraved views with center-pieces printed in green, all within decorative borders after Lempriere and Gravelot (3 plates with expertly repaired tears into illustration without loss, one or two other marginal repairs). Contemporary mottled calf (slightly rubbed, rebacked with sheep). Provenance: With the engraved armorial book plate of original subscriber the Rt. Hon. George Neville, first Lord Abergavenny (1727-1785) on the front paste-down. First edition, and ORIGINAL SUBSCRIBERS COPY, of Pine's celebrated work depicting the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, were ". perhaps inspired by the success of Picart's publication in 1714 of Charles Le Brun's Meleager tapestries. The Lords set of ten huge hangings, designed by Hendrick Vroom (1563-1640) and depicting the defeat of the Spanish armada, hung in the house from 1650 until 1834, when they were destroyed by fire. Pine's prints were engraved after drawings by C. Lempriere and embellished with elegant borders incorporating emblematic figures by Hubert Gravelot, the French artist who had travelled to England in 1732 to assist on an English edition of Picart's "Cérémonies et coutumes religieuses de tous les peuples du monde" (1733-7). Pine evidently regarded the armada prints as one of the major projects of his career, since he used his influence to ensure that the Copyright Act of 1735 gave him the exclusive right to copy the tapestries, the insertion of a clause to this effect at the third reading of the bill in April 1735 indicating that the scheme took at least four years from inception to publication" (DNB). Berlin Kat. 1677.
