He benefitted not only from the tutelage of his father but growing up in a milieu surrounded by some of the greatest artists of that period including Claude Monet, Paul Signac and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Although French by birth, from a young age, Pissarro was drawn to English shores, visiting first as a child in 1870-71 and settling permanently in 1890. He became a British citizen in 1916 and was an integral part of the English art scene of the first half of the twentieth century. His influence is notable in the work of Walter Sickert, Harold Gilman and Spencer Gore.Pissarro is primarily known as a landscape painter and the present oil is a typical example of his work. Between 1913 and 1919, he travelled extensively producing views of Dorset, Westmorland, Surrey, Sussex, Essex and Devon. The present work, although painted some decades later, is based on a drawing from that period. It forms part of a group of works from 1914 depicting the village and landscape around Brough in Westmorland, now Cumbria, of which Wild Boar Fell, Brough is held by Manchester Art Gallery.

LUCIEN PISSARRO (Paris, 1863 - London, 1944). "A garden in Bormes", 1926. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. Labeled "James Bourlet & Soms Ldt." on the back. It is referenced in the catalog raisonné. Measurements: 45 x 55 cm, 63 x 73 cm (frame). As much in his style as in the subject matter, the influence of Camille Pissarro in the work of his son Lucien was absolutely determinant. His landscapes, as in the case of the garden in Bormes, become a faithful testimony of the impressionist legacy, making the representation of nature a completely sensorial experience for both the artist and the observer. The boundaries between the different natural elements are blurred by the use of pastel shades that he resolves by means of soft transitions. In this sense, this technical aspect does nothing more than recreate the incessant search that painters such as Lucien Pissarro carried out with respect to lighting effects, and how, through them, they were able to capture the fleeting and changing atmosphere of the natural landscape. Lucien Pissarro was a French-British painter, engraver and printer who belonged to the Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist movements. He was the first-born son of the French painter Camille Pissarro, one of the leaders of the Impressionist movement. Lucien Pissarro was initiated in the art of painting by his father, Camille Pissarro, one of the most prominent impressionist painters of the time, specialized in landscape painting. With his father, Lucien learned the techniques of plein air painting characteristic of impressionist landscape painting. At the age of twenty he moved to London, a stay that marked the beginning of an important correspondence with his father, a valuable source of information on Impressionism. In 1884 he returned to Paris, where he began to work with the printer Manzi, in whose workshop he was initiated in the art of woodcut. As for painting, Pissarro is one of the first painters to adhere to the aesthetics of neo-Impressionism advocated by Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. He became known through his participation in various group exhibitions such as the eighth Impressionist exhibition in 1886, in which Seurat and Signac also exhibited; the Salon des Indépendants of the same year and the group exhibition of the XX group in Brussels in 1888. In 1890 he moved permanently to England, although it was not until 1916 when he became a British citizen. There he continued to work in plein air painting and came into contact with British artists, especially with the Pre-Raphaelites. In 1892 he married Esther Bensuan and the following year the couple settled in Epping, where their daughter Orovida was born, also an outstanding painter and the continuation of the family saga of artists. In 1884, Lucien and Esther founded Eragny Press, a publisher of art books that played a decisive role in the evolution of this type of publication, inspired by the experience of William Morris and his Kelmscott Press. In 1896 he left the Independent group and began to participate in various group exhibitions of British artists. In 1911 he was one of the founders of the Camden Town Group, a collective of British artists in the post-impressionist style. In 1913 he held a solo exhibition of his work in London for the first time. He died in London in 1944. His legacy is in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, in the family archive organized by Esther Pissarro and Orivida.

An excellent, rare joint pair of A.Ls.S. by Paul Cezanne and Lucien Pissarro to a bifolium, commencing with Cezanne's A.L.S., P Cezanne, two pages, small 8vo, Pontoise, 11th December 1872, to Camille Pissarro ('Monsieur Pissarro'), in French. Je vous souhaite le bonsoir' (Translation: 'I take up Lucien's pen at an hour when the railway should be transporting me to my penates [home]. This is to tell you in a roundabout way that I missed the train. Needless to add that I am your guest until tomorrow, Wednesday. So, Mrs. Pissarro requests that you bring back from Paris some powdered milk for little Georges. And Lucien's shirts, which are with his aunt Felicity. I wish you a good evening'). Following to the third side of the bifolium is the young Lucien Pissarro's A.L.S., Lucien Pissarro, one page, 8vo, n.p. (Pontoise), [11th December] 1872, to his father ('Mon cher papa'), in French. (Translation: 'Mama wants you to know the door is broken so come quick because thieves could come. Please bring me a box of paints. Minette begs you to bring her a bathing costume. I am not writing well because I don't feel like it'). Two charming letters with excellent associations. Some light overall age wear, otherwise VG Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) French Impressionist painter. Georges Henri Manzana Pissarro (1871-1961) French artist who worked in Impressionist and Post-Impressionist styles and was also a designer of textiles, decorative objects, furniture and glassware. Jeanne-Rachel 'Minette' Pissarro (1865-1874) Daughter of Camille and Julie Pissarro, the artist's favourite amongst his seven children. Minette appears in more portraits by Pissarro than any of her siblings. When she became ill at the age of eight, her father represented her decline in a moving series of paintings and drawings including a heart-breaking lithograph depicting her as she lay dying.
