Fritz Pitz began his artistic education with apprenticing in the parental photo studio. Afterwards, he studied photography and painting in Weimar. Soon, he established his reputation as a portrait photographer. His photographs were shown in international exhibitions since 1955. In 1963, he made his breakthrough with the commission to portray the artists of the Galerie de France in Paris. He was one of the first photographers in 1970 to exhibit at the Louvre. He became famous for portraits of well-known public characters as Salvador Dalí, Joseph Beuys, Henry Moore, David Hockney or Willy Brandt. He was a member of the Club of International Photographers, the Royal Photographic Society and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie.
