      ERNA PLACHTE (GERMAN, 1893-1986) ST BASIL'S CATHEDRAL AND THE RED TOWER, KREMLIN, MOSCOW signed and dated 1931 l.r; pastel 38.5cm x 47.5cm Plachte was a German born artist and illustrator who was an official painter at the League of Nations in the early 1930s. She eventually settled in Oxford teaching at the Ruskin School of Art, where a residency was named after her. These rare views of Moscow at the height of the USSR were painted on a trip the artist made there in the early 1930s.

      Erna Plachte (German, 1893-1986) Lady in green, 1921 signed and dated, pastel 19" x 15". Erna Plachte was most noted for his work as an artist at the League of Nations between 1933 to 1936. He divided his time between Germany, where he was an war artist during the First World War and Britain, where he taught art following exile from Germany in the 1930s. He later taught at the Ruskin School of Art in Oxford.
