10 lithographs on laid paper; in original portfolio Germany, 1923 Wilhelm Plünnecke (1894-1954) - German expressionist, graphic artist and illustrator All sheets are signed "Wilhelm Plünnecke" and are dated "1922" or "1923" Published by the Friedrich Dehne Verlag,Leipzig, 1923 Number 10 of a total of 10 Dimensions of the portfolio: 49 x 35 cm; dimensions of the folio: 47 x 32 cm; dimensions of the printing plates: 20 x 30 cm Provenance: Berlin Private collection, originally Collection Freud (relatives of Sigmund Freud) This portfolio by Wilhelm Plünnecke comprises 10 lithographs about the novel "Germinal", which was published in 1885 and is part of the two volume novel "The life of the family Rougon-Marquart" by the French naturalist Émile Zola (1840-1902). Following the tradition of the literature of the late 19 th century, during the industralisation, portraying workers and their families and their struggle through their everyday life, these lithographs show images of poor, hardworking people and their failure to get out of their living conditions. "Germinal", the key work of European naturalistic literature describes the cruel working conditions in the French mines. Already the cover folio gives an idea of the content of the portfolio as it shows several smoking factory stacks, towering in front of a dark sky. Almost Goya-like in its style, the artist Wilhelm Plünnecke created with these images a visual canon to Zola's socio-critical oeuvre. The lithographs are in good condition with only small creases alongside the edges. The paper is evenly browned and shows some foxing. The portfolio shows apparent traces of age and wear. The dimensions of the portfolio are 49 x 35 cm; the dimensions of the sheets are each 47 x 32 cm, and of the printing plates approximately 20 x 30 cm. All prints are signed with "Wilhelm Plünnecke" and are dated either "1922" or "1923" and bear the numbering "10/10". Wilhelm Plünnecke (1894-1954) Born 1894 in Hannover, the German expressionist, graphic artist and painter Wilhelm Plünnecke studied drawing under the graphic artist Emil Orlik (1870-1932) in Berlin. Plünnecke illustrated mainly literary works such as the "Dante's Death" or "Woyzeck" by Büchner.
