(Copenhagen 1815–1876 Fredensborg on Zealand) The Wedding Procession, signed, dated A. Plum 1837, oil on canvas, 63.5 x 79 cm, framed This early work by the much-travelled Danish genre painter Paul August Plum presents a multi-layered and narratively dense scene that captures one of the most important moments in the lives of many young couples: the wedding. In typical genre painting style, Plum places this festive event in an idyllic rural setting that aims to provide a lively insight into contemporary village life. A musical duo consisting of a violinist and a wood clarinetist lead the wedding procession from a dark farmhouse in the foreground. On the opposite side of the road, the curious villagers, young and old, have gathered to watch the procession. Behind the musicians, the eye is drawn to the young bride, dressed in traditional dark costume. Her pinned-up hair is adorned with delicate roses, and her slightly flushed cheeks evoke embarrassment and nervousness. Holding hands, she walks in step with her father, an older man with long, greyish hair and a wide-brimmed hat. Father and daughter are caught by the warm, glistening light of the sun, which illuminates not only the figures themselves, but also their path towards the striking church with its stepped gable in the background of the picture, thus narrating the entire wedding procession. The wedding party is rounded off by four women standing behind the bride in the doorway of the rustic house. Three of them are facing the bride, while the fourth woman, barely recognisable, stands out from the darkness of the house with her elaborately decorated hairstyle. This suggests that there are other people in the house who will join the bride and groom on their journey. This composition, with its sophisticated interplay of light and shadow, testifies to Plum's flair for detail and atmosphere.
