DESIGNER WALTER PLUNKETT (1902-1982) SELF PORTRAIT 1958

            Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Walter Cohick Plunkett (California, New York, 1902-1982) Self Portrait 1958 The artist, famous Hollywood costume designer Walter Plunkett, depicts himself sitting on one leg, the other bent at the knee, in a chair with green pillow. He wears a tank wristwatch and a loose-fitting shirt open at the neck. Cup and saucers sit on an oddly elongated kidney-shape table centered by a green mid-century ash tray with cigarette butts. The background and side views are compressed, curved and lengthened. The perspective is skewed. The composition is convex as the artist portrays himself reflected in a silver coffee pot. The reflective body of the rounded pot forms a bent perspective. The base of the pot's handle is visible on the right. A section of the spout is seen on the left. The oil on canvas is signed in reverse lower right and dated 1958. Sight size measures 15.5 x 11.5 with a framed size of 22 x 18 inches. We happily provide seamless in-house packing and shipping services on nearly everything we sell. Until further notice, we cannot offer international shipping in-house.

            Est: $500 -

Walter Plunkett: One Complete Set of Six Costume Designs for GONE WITH THE WIND: All Signed and Numbered. WALTER PLUNKETT (California/New York, 1902-1982) Arguably one of the most popular films of the 20th Century, a landmark of movie making and box-office success that was based on a monstrous bestselling novel. MGM Studios spared no expense in the production and that included the costume designs by Walter Plunkett who worked on over 150 films during his incredibly prolific career earning him 10 Academy Award nominations and one Oscar. Walter Plunkett was involved with the signing and selling of this limited edition portfolio in the mid-1970s, featuring lithograph copies of his Gone with the Wind costume sketches. There was a limited run of only 1000 sets, each with five of his sketches of costumes for Vivien Leigh's Scarlett, and one of Clark Gable's Rhett. All sketches in this set are personally signed and numbered in pencil by Plunkett in the lower left just below the image and this one is numbered 342/1000. They are housed in a white folder, and separated by sheets of tissue. Also included is a full sheet with Plunkett's filmography, and a copy of a sketch of the artist himself. A very lightly examined, unrestored portfolio near mint folio with fresh, saturated colors. Estimated Value $500-UP.

This piece is an original costume design from the iconic film "Gone With the Wind" worn by Vivien Leigh as "Scarlett O'Hara". This was the final design for the dress, and the one eventually used for the film. This costume is for the infamous red ballgown, worn to "Ashley Wilkes" birthday party, and is an important part of the film's plot. After rumors spread of Scarlett's inappropriate behavior spread around Atlanta, she tries to skip the birthday party but is forced to attend the party by her infuriated husband, who forces her to wear an ensemble that makes her a living embodiment of a "scarlet" woman. Her husband was an expert on women's clothes, and was trying to humiliate Scarlett with his choice of clothing. Scarlett's red ballgown would not have been appropriate attire for a birthday party, as viewers can easily tell from the dresses the other women were wearing. Plunkett's design for the red ballgown is both a beautifully crafted example of the Gilded Age style, and an important symbolic moment in the movie's plot. The lithograph is hand signed in pencil, and is numbered 502/1000. The piece is in excellent condition, and has been professionally framed. The piece (including the frame) measures 21" x 17".
