Olio su tela. cm 52,8x39. Firmato in basso a destra. Opera dall'ottima fattura e scelta cromatica: il colore utilizzato per rappresentare la figura femminile ed il pulcino fanno sì che i soggetti risultino in completo rilievo rispetto allo sfondo, accentuando la dolcezza della scena. Principalmente noto per le sue opere iperdecorativiste, l'artista conserva un profondo rigore tecnico che vede unirsi una formazione neoclassica a piccoli sprazzi liberty. (1)

LUDOVICO POGLIAGHI (Milan, 1857 - Varese, 1950). "The Death of Pliny in Pompeii", 1890. With label on the back and handwritten inscription. Signed at the lower left. Provenance: private collection conceived since the 1970s between London and Madrid. Measurements: 37 x 55 cm. Ludovico Pogliaghi was born in an upper middle class Milanese family. He enrolled at the Brera Academy at a very early age; and in 1889 he completed his studies. Among his strongest influences was Giuseppe Bertini, who taught him painting. During the 1880s he obtained important commissions for the artistic decoration of palaces belonging to the Milanese aristocracy. He also executed religious works and embarked on a career as an illustrator of historical subjects for the Treves publishing house in Milan. He was appointed professor of decoration at the Brera Academy in 1890, and in 1895 won a prestigious competition to design the bronze doors of the Duomo in Milan. One of his works is the Pietà above the entrance to the Expiatori Chapel in Monza. As a leading exponent of an eclectic academicism oriented towards the restoration of earlier classical styles, he engaged in an intense activity that saw him involved in all the major official works of the time, including as a consultant to the Department of Antiquities and Fine Arts, and as a restorer. During the 1920s, while continuing with his official duties, he gradually withdrew from the art world, devoting himself mainly to ecclesiastical commissions. In his mature years, from the mid-1880s onwards, he retired to the house-museum of the Sacro Monte di Varese, where he assembled his collection of antique art, which is displayed together with models of his own works.

In una delle lettere l’artista parla di un viaggio a Roma per vedere ‘il portale di bronzo della Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore a cui lavorai da molti anni prima della guerra. Non le dico le molte difficoltà che incontrai per quest’opera affidatami da S.S. Pio XI e che ora affrettatamente si colloca coi marmi di contorno’. (3)

TRITON ET NAÏADE Attribué à Lodovico POGLIAGHI (1857-1950) Milan, dernier quart du XIXe siècle MATÉRIAUX Noyer sculpté H. 125 cm, L. 80 cm, P. 55 cm TWO LAST QUARTER OF 19TH CENTURY ITALIAN WALNUT FIGURES OF TRITON AND NAIAD Attributed to Lodovico POGLIAGHI (1857-1950) 49.21 in. high, 31.49 in. wide, 21.65 in. deep Ces deux groupes en bois sculpté figurant respectivement Triton et Naïade accompagnés d'un enfant sont à rapprocher du travail du sculpteur Lodovico Pogliaghi, actif à Milan dans le dernier quart du XIXe siècle.La nervosité de la sculpture se retrouve dans le traitement des chevelures et des mouvements de chacun des personnages. Les modelés des corps sont ici parfaitement rendus, témoignant de la grande maîtrise technique de l'artiste. Une paire de groupes en bois peint similaires à ceux présentés tant de l'iconographie que dans la hardiesse du traitement du bois, est conservée à la Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild.Au cours des années 1880, le talent de Pogliaghi fut très vite reconnu par l'aristocratie milanaise qui lui passa de nombreuses commandes pour orner leurs palais. Il gagna notamment le concours pour le décor de la porte de la cathédrale de cette cité.L'éclectisme dont il fit preuve notamment dans un répertoire inspiré du grand art baroque italien se retrouve dans la figure d'Isaïe pour la basilique de Padoue où encore dans les éléments sculptés de la Villa Crespi de Milan. La manière de traiter ces deux exemples est très proche de nos oeuvres notamment en comparant les visages des deux personnages masculins et le modelé du corps nus des naïades.
