    Stephanie Elaine Pogue 1944-2002 African Patterns 1974 print/mixed media 25 x 17-1/2 inches (image) 28 x 20-1/2 inches (sheet) signed, dated, titled, and numbered, 2/10, with Color State IV in pencil Provenance: the artist to her fellow artist, Earl Hooks, Sr; thence by descent. Pogue and Hooks were both professors at Fisk University (Pogue from 1968-1981). Pogue worked under Aaron Douglas at Fisk, and eventually taught printmaking. Her skill in this area led Douglas to enlist Pogue to print his own images later in life, such as the Emperor Jones Series, The Junkman, and The Window Shopper.

    STEPHANIE E. POGUE (1944 - 2002) Carnival. Color intaglio, 1968. 457x533 mm; 18x21 inches, full margins. Signed, titled, dated and numbered 3/10 in pencil, lower margin, full margins. As a printmaker, Stephanie E. Pogue worked with Aaron Douglas, reprinting many of his earlier prints, including The Junkman and Emperor Jones. Pogue earned her BA from Howard University in 1966 and her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI. Her work has been exhibited at Fisk University, the David C. Driskell Center at the University of Maryland, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Spelman College and Howard University.
