    Paul Poincy (American/New Orleans, 1833-1909)

    Est: $5,000 - $8,000

Paul Poincy (American/New Orleans, 1833-1909), "Marie Madeleine Seebold (1866-1948) at the Easel", 1890, oil on canvas, signed and dated upper left, "W. E. Seebold, Bookseller, Stationer and Fine Art Dealer, New Orleans" label en verso, 15 in. x 10 in., period frame. Note: Paul Poincy was part of a diverse group of artists, musicians, writers and prominent New Orleanians who frequented the “Seebold salon” held at the home of W.E. and Lisette Seebold beginning in the 1870s and continuing through the early decades of the 20th century. W.E. Seebold, a German immigrant, came to Louisiana in the 1850s and after serving as a Private in the Confederate Army, made his home in New Orleans. After the Civil War, Seebold opened a store on Canal Street, where he profited from the sale of books, stationery, art supplies and frames; he also became an art dealer while simultaneously building his own collection. Through his shop, Seebold formed many important connections in the art and literary circles of New Orleans, which firmly established Seebold and his home as a center of artistic and cultural discussion. Poincy, in addition to visiting Seebold’s shop and socializing with his family, also at one time rented an art studio above Seebold’s store. Seebold’s daughter, Marie, studied under Poincy, as well as George David Coulon, Bror Anders Wikström and Andrés Molinary. Collaboration between mentor and student or among colleagues was a common occurrence. Marie Seebold was painted on numerous occasions by Andrés Molinary (whom she later married), and in the work offered here, Poincy’s portrait of Marie at her easel with one of her floral still lifes provides a glimpse into the life of New Orleans artists working at the turn of the 20th century.
