JOSEPH WHEELER'S WEST POINT CLASS PHOTOGRAPH Original albumen photograph, 5" x 7 1/4", on a 8 1/2" x 11 1/4" backing, a waist- up seated portrait of future Confederate cavalry general JOSEPH WHEELER (1836-1906) in his West Point cadet's uniform, circa 1858 or 1859. A pencil identifying inscription appears at top right in an unknown hand. Unusually, the verso of the mount bears a second albumen portrait, depicting future brigadier general FRANCIS LUTHER GUENTHER (1838-1918), who signs at bottom right in black ink. Very good.
