NICOLAS POL (FRENCH B. 1977)WHILE YOU EAT SHIT (AT NEVERLODGE)Mixed media on canvas Signed, titled and dated 2015 verso 201 x 291cm (79 x 114½ in.)Unframed Exhibited:'Hurts Twice as Much', OSME Gallery, Vienna, October - November 2015 Nicolas Pol was born in in Paris and spent much of his childhood in Africa before returning to France, where he earned his degrees from the prestigious Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris and at the University of Cinema, Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris. `Pol's work consists of raw, engaging pieces that incorporate layered paint, stencils, text and silk-screening that draw from and concurrently comment on predominant themes in pop culture and advertising' is how the Critic E. Barker, in his article reviewing Pol's 2011 exhibition Sick Atavus of the New Blood, described his work. He continued `The viewer is immediately engrossed by Pol's use of brilliant primary colours that seem to have been boldly applied to the canvas. Despite the frenetic nature of the pieces, the earthy, graffiti-like quality of the work speaks to a universal mythology that is accessible to all.' References to Paizer, a brand he created and to NeverLodge, an imaginary theme park are motifs that reappear in many of his works including the present picture. Pol's work has been shown in numerous international solo exhibitions in galleries including Restoin Rotfield, New York, Cartier Pour L'Art Contemporain, Paris and Allsopp Contemporary in London.
