      Est: €8,000 - €9,000

Attributed to FRANCISCO POLANCO (Jaén, 1610 - Seville, 1651) "Saint Paul". Oil on canvas. Relined. Original frame from the 17th century. It presents repainting. Measurements: 79 x 55 cm; 95 x 71 cm (frame). This canvas represents a martyred saint, tied to a trunk and with a big nail sunk in his forehead. A cold light falls on the white of the robe and illuminates the suffering face. The night is tinged with cobalt blue and intensifies the pathos depicted. This is a Baroque painting, with strong contrasts of light and an interest in arousing intense emotions. Its language is close to that of Zurbarán, of whom Francisco Polanco was a disciple. Polanco left us notable examples of paintings in which solitary martyrs cry out for divine help, with their eyes turned heavenwards, in compositions very similar to the one shown here. Little biographical information is known about this painter, of whom all that is known is that he had a brother who was also a painter, named Miguel, and that he was buried in Seville in the parish church of La Magdalena in 1651. Signed works include a series of five half-length Apostles in the Museo Nacional de San Carlos in Mexico City, of poor execution and Zurbaránesque features, and a Saint John the Baptist in Seville cathedral, of a more advanced style in terms of its expressiveness and sense of colour, showing his knowledge of the work of the young Murillo, whose influence merges with that of Zurbarán. Alone or together with his brother, he has long been attributed with a number of canvases that are close in composition and type to Zurbarán's work. Among these, the most significant may be the series that occupies the upper part of the walls of the central nave of the church of Santo Ángel in Seville, whose subjects are Jacob and the angel, The Virgin of Carmen protecting the Order, Saint Teresa walking accompanied by the angels, Abraham and the three angels, Saint Raphael and Tobias and Saint Isidore the farmer helped by the angels. Although the attribution is controversial and the work of at least three different artists has been suggested, Antonio Ponz noted in his Viaje de España, "I believe that they are by a certain Polanco". Ceán Bermúdez, in his Diccionario histórico-artístico, assigned the series - without the canvas of the Virgin Protecting the Order - to the Polanco brothers, using information that is now lost, and dated its execution to between 1646 and 1649. Thus, Valdivieso and Serrera, among others, accepted that Francisco was responsible for the three biblical subjects, in which they saw similarities with the Saint John in Seville cathedral, and assigned the other two to Miguel, whose artistic personality remains enigmatic.

FRANCISCO POLANCO (Jaén - Seville, 1651) "Saint Paul". Oil on canvas. Relined. Work registered and published by Odile Delensa. Page 339 catalogue Zurbaran and workman Vol. II Measurements: 97 x 113 cm; 116 x 132,5 cm (frame). In this canvas St. Paul is represented half-length, in the foreground on a neutral background, with his gaze directed towards the sky. He is dressed in a dark, ochre-coloured tunic, accompanied by his sword, his main iconographic attribute, and holding a book facing the viewer, depicted in the Baroque manner. In fact, we can see that it is a leather-bound book. Saint Paul was a Hellenised Jew from the Diaspora, born in Tarsus. He was therefore Jewish by ethnicity, Greek by culture and Roman by nationality. He received the name Saul, which he changed to Paul after his conversion. Born at the beginning of the first century, he studied in Jerusalem under the rabbi Gamaliel, who would have been noted for his hatred of Christians. One day, when he was on his way from Jerusalem to Damascus around the year 35, he was dazzled by lightning and fell from his horse. Then he heard the voice of Jesus saying to him: "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? As a result of this experience, the saint went abruptly from persecutor to zealot of Christianity. After curing the blindness of a Christian from Damascus, he began his life as a missionary until he reached Jerusalem, where he came into contact with Peter and the other apostles. In the Middle Ages numerous corporations were placed under his patronage, due to various aspects of his iconography, life and miracles. However, St Paul was never a popular saint, which is proof of the relative poverty of his iconography. In fact, his role in art is not commensurate with his importance in the spread of Christianity. In early Christian art his only attributes are a book or a scroll, and in the 13th century his emblem appears, the sword that was the instrument of his martyrdom. Little biographical information is known about this painter, of whom the only thing that is known is that he had a brother who was also a painter, named Miguel, and that he was buried in Seville in the parish church of La Magdalena in 1651. Signed works include a series of five half-length Apostles in the Museo Nacional de San Carlos in Mexico City, The latter is more advanced in its expressiveness and sense of colour, showing his knowledge of the work of the young Murillo, whose influence merges with that of Zurbarán. Alone or together with his brother, some canvases have been attributed to him since antiquity which, although close in composition and type to Zurbarán's work, are not of the same quality. Among these, the most significant may be the series that occupies the upper part of the walls of the central nave of the church of Santo Ángel in Seville, whose subjects are Jacob and the Angel, The Virgin of Mount Carmel protecting the Order, Saint Teresa walking accompanied by the angels, Abraham and the three angels, Saint Raphael and Tobias and Saint Isidore the Farmer helped by the angels. FRANCISCO POLANCO, San Matías. Oil on canvas

      Est: -
