          POLLARD, Robert (c. 1755-1838). London Fire Engines. Watercolor on paper. 8 5/8" x 11 3/4" sheet, 20" x 24" framed. An extremely rare watercolor by the noted engraver, painter and print publisher Robert Pollard, who was most well known for his sporting scenes. Pollard's printed works are plentiful, but his original paintings and watercolors are quite scarce.

          Robert Pollard (1755-1838) after Nicholas Pocock (1740-1821) The approach of the British Squadron to the attack of the French under Admiral De Brueys off the Mouth of the Nile on the Evening of the 1st of August 1798, handcoloured aquatint, pub. by N. Pocock, London 1798; together with 'Glorious Victory over the French Fleet, on the Night of the 1st of August 1798, in the Bay of Bequieres', a pair, both 18 1/2 x 24in. (47 x 61cm.), in Hogarth frames. (2) * - British Squadron: Paper is toned, evenly across the sheet. Small split to sheet at upper right corner. Light creasing to sheet visible to right hand side. - Glorious Victory: Restored tear across full height of the print from top centre to bottom. This restoration has been well executed but is clearly visible under close inspection. Dark fox mark upper margin. Faint water mark to left of lower margin. Sheet is lightly toned and colours good overall.

          Both after Robert Smirke Engravings, both with aquatint by Francis Jukes, the latter with hand-colouring 1786 and 1784, respectively, by the engraver Each c.445 x 545mm. (17 1/2 x 21 1/2 in) Unframed The Halsewell was an early East Indiaman, built in 1778. On her 4th voyage, in January 1786, destined for India and Japan, she ran into a gale in the English Channel and ran onto rocks at Seacombe, Isle of Purbeck, Dorset, with the loss of all but 74 of the 240 passengers and crew. The Grosvenor was sailing home from Trinidad when she struck rocks off the Pondoland coast of Eastern Cape Province in Southern Africa, in June 1782. Although all but the drunken cook's mate made it to shore, the attempted long walk to Cape Town finished off nearly all the survivors.

          run aground in chase of the French Corvette Brutus, after Nicholas Pocock mixed-method engraving with hand-colouring, [C.113(a)] 1798, William Faden 395 x 610mm. (15 1/2 x 24 in) The frigate Mermaid , under Captain Henry Warre, spotted two French corvettes seeking to land troops and supplies on Grenada, so gave chase to one, Brutus . They ended up in the Bay of Requin, where the French troops landed and attempted to set fire to their vessel, but the British were still able to capture it, despite running aground, and added it to their navy, renaming Warre after their captain.
