      Vladimir Polunin (Russian, b.1880) Fishes signed and dated lower right "V Polunin / 1927" oil on canvas under glass h:41 w:48 cm Provenance: Alex Reid and Lefevre Ltd., 1 King Street, St James's, London, SW1. Vladimir Polunin came to England as Diaghilev's main designer for the Ballets Russes and remained in England to teach scene painting at the Slade School of Art. He produced set designs and used famous Italian artworks to decorate London's Phoenix Theatre. His book The Continental Method of Scene Painting, was a memoir of his life and career. Vladimir Polunin married Elizabeth Polunin (nee Hart), (21 May 1887- 1950), also an artist and theatre designer, most notable for her work with Sergei Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes.

      VLADIMIR POLUNIN (1880-1957) SUMMER NIGHTS / UNDERGOUND. 1930. 40x25 inches, 101 1/2x63 1/2 cm. Waterlow & Sons Limited, London. Condition A-: restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; minor creases and repaired tears at edges. In the bottom center is depicted "the new Underground headquarters building . . . [which] at ten storeys . . . was London's largest and tallest office block and the city's first American-style skyscraper" (London Transport p. 43). Russian-born Polunin came to London with Diagalev, as the main set designer for the Ballets Russe. He stayed in England and taught a course in stage design at the Slade School of Art.
