Originally mid-19th century or earlier oil on canvas depicting someone in formal garbs. In typical Poncelet fashion, the portrait face replaced by a dog's head. Artist signed to lower right. In a gilt wood frame. Thierry Poncelet was born in 1946 in Brussels, and studied Fine Arts at the St. Luc Academy. Thereafter he joined Max Massot's workshop to learn the art of painting in a traditional way and restoring fine paintings. After establishing himself as a renowned restorer he also began to deal fine arts. As he began to deal with fine arts and restoring, he was inspired to develop a style to replace the head of a portrait he was working on, by his own dog's. The result was striking, and only wanted to keep it as a sarcastic painting of his own token. However, the enthusiasm of friends and colleagues for this strange restoration was immediate and since then many other Aristochiens were born from forgotten family portraits. Poncelet was born in Brussels and studied fine arts at the St. Luc Academy. He was known as an expert art restorer. His project was restoring a portrait painting of an early 19th-century gentleman but replaced the head with his own dog. The result was striking, and the enthusiasm of friends and colleagues encouraged him to pursue this style, and the rest is history. Known throughout the world for his unique art. Size: 14.5" x 11". Poncelet is a Brussels born artist who paints anthropomorphic canine portraits which charm viewers and have gained him worldwide recognition, sight 30" x 25", with frame 35" x 30", possible restoration, overall good condition, comes with high quality posters of this image. Note: together with a large quantity of lithographs of the painting with title “King of Terriers”, these posters were professionally printed and handed out at dog shows in England. Poncelet Anthropomorphic Portrait of a Dalmatian Dog Military Officer Oil Canvas

Thierry Poncelet (Belgian, b. 1946) anthropomorphic portrait of a Dalmatian dog, possibly circa 1990. Originally mid-19th century or earlier oil on canvas depicting a senior military officer. In typical Poncelet fashion, the portrait face replaced by a dog's head. In a gilt wood frame. Thierry Poncelet was born in 1946 in Brussels, and studied Fine Arts at the St. Luc Academy. Thereafter he joined Max Massot's workshop to learn the art of painting in a traditional way and restoring fine paintings. After establishing himself as a renowned restorer he also began to deal fine arts. As he began to deal with fine arts and restoring, he was inspired to develop a style to replace the head of a portrait he was working on, by his own dog's. The result was striking, and only wanted to keep it as a sarcastic painting of his own token. However, the enthusiasm of friends and colleagues for this strange restoration was immediate and since then many other Aristochiens were born from forgotten family portraits.
