Extrême-Orient, Hanoi Ha Long Bay (which translates as Descending Dragon Bay) is located in Tonkin, the name for North Vietnam. It comprises thousands of limestone islands jutting out of the water, many of which contain the relics of ancient peoples and species dating as far back as 16,000 BC. To promote travel to the area, Ponchin depicts a young boy navigating his boat through the windy canals of the region. Below, two small tableaus depict other major attractions, including the Grotte des Merveilles, the largest of many caves on the islands. This variant features an English-language tip-on.

Dense and covered in deep bas-reliefs, it is one of the most important sites of Cambodian history. The medallion to the lower right showcases some of the famous face carvings, one of the more prominent and interesting decorations on the central temple area.

Extrême-Orient, Hanoi In the early 1930s, the painter Jos-Henri Ponchin was commissioned to create various travel posters promoting French Indochina, a southeast Asian division of French colonial states including all of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. These images are all languid, dreamy depictions of the East, presented in hazy, subdued colors -- almost like mirages or scenes behind a veil. Here, a traditional Cambodian Khmer dancer encased in gold is caught mid-performance for the viewer, an umbrellaed elephant rider and closely-grouped series of ancient structures peering out of the misty shadows of Phnom Penh (the country’s largest city) in the background.
