HERBERT PONTING (1870-1935) A group of 29 photographs documenting the Terra Nova Expedition. 1910-11.

          Est: $3,000 - $4,500

HERBERT PONTING (1870-1935) A group of 29 photographs documenting the Terra Nova Expedition. 1910-11. Silver prints, the images measuring 3¾x4¾ to 4¾x6⅝ inches (9.5x12.1 to 12.1x16.8 cm.), and the reverse, each with a numeric notation, some with the title, in pencil, on verso. Provenance The Estate of Michael Carlebach Ponting is best known for capturing the Terra Nova expedition of 1910-12, which Robert Falcon Scott led to South Pole. Ponting favored high-quality images taken on glass plates to capture images of Antarctic icescapes and landscapes. He also took many flash photographs of Scott and the other members of the expedition in their Cape Evans hut during the 1911 winter. After 14 months at Cape Evans, he left the Polar party in February 1912 to return to London and prepare his photographs for exhibition. Ponting's Antarctic work took on a tragic overtone and became a memorial to Scott and his companion after he learned of the deaths of the Terra Nova crew members along with the rest of the world in 1913, nearly a year after they perished.

Herbert George Ponting (1870-1935) Herbert George Ponting (1870-1935) THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA, 1907. Carbon print, image/sheet size 395 x 555mm. Herbert George Ponting (1870-1935) is best known for documenting Robert Falcon Scott’s Terra Nova Expedition, where he acted as the expedition's photographer and cinematographer, creating some of the most famous and memorable images of Scott's ill-fated journey to the South Pole. Prior to taking on this landmark assignment, Ponting established his reputation as a successful documentary photographer in Asia, publishing landscape stereoviews and publishing images in English-language periodicals. From 1904-1907, he traveled throughout Japan, Myanmar, Korea, China and India. The present view was taken by Ponting in 1907, towards the end of his travels in Asia -- a sweeping view of the Great Wall from Nankou Pass, north of Beijing.

HERBERT PONTING (1870-1935) - A sledge dog listening to the gramophone HERBERT PONTING (1870-1935) A sledge dog listening to the gramophone black and white print blind-stamped 'The Ponting Collection' (lower right) and with an official edition label numbered 109/400 to reverse 16 x 19½in. (40.5 x 49.5cm.) framed and glazed Another version of this image is annotated by Ponting as 'Chris the Sledge Dog listening to the Gramophone';' The Gramophone Co. gave Scott a Monarch Senior machine, the top model of the day, along with several hundred mainly single-sided shellac records. In this image, Ponting revisits the famous Dog and Gramophone trademark which had been adopted in 1909 by the Gramophone Co. which was then renamed His Master's Voice. It seems the choice of records provided an area of discord on the expedition with the crew preferring jaunty sing-along music hall discs, whilst the officers preferred opera and concertos. It's thought that the record being played in this image is Tettrazini's version of the Bell Song from Lakmé by Delibes. Fine condition

          Est: £3,000 - £5,000

Herbert George Ponting Early Stereocards (1870-1935)  An early collection of Herbert George Ponting's unpublished personal stereo cards (10) c.1900, with handwritten inscriptions and annotations to verso in the photographer's hand, including technical considerations and comments from a period when Ponting was refining his photographic practices and transitioning from being an amateur hobbyist to a celebrated professional. Subjects include his wife Mary Biddle Elliott and daughter Mildred, their Sausalito home, Northern Californian views including Mount Tamalpais, Angel Island, a Lion in the San Francisco Zoo (later published) and incredible action shots of Ponting diving into the water from a pier (3).  These stereo cards come together with other personal effects: A Beck Symmetrical Lens housed in a damaged Bausch & Lomb 'Challenge' shutter (no.665288), the focal length, measured at 14", matching Ponting's technical annotation to verso of one Stereo card titled verso '14 inch lens'.  A pair of Primavesi Bros mountaineering goggles with felted webbing, similar in size and shape to those worn by Ponting on the Scott missions and to those referenced in his personal diary entries. Primavesi Bros had premises in Bournemouth where these goggles were purchased and they supplied various types of expedition equipment. Ponting was based close by in Salisbury during his time in the U.K.  A 1910 Armeemodell 1910 Aluminium cased Bezard Kompass. Provenance: This whole group of items was acquired as a single lot by the current owner in a regional auction house in 2015. Although we have no conclusive provenance to verify a direct link of ownership to Ponting, the stereo cards have been viewed by various experts and all are of the strong opinion that the handwriting, personal annotations, and photographic subjects relate to Ponting directly Literature: Arnold, H.J.P., Photographs of the World: a biography of Herbert Ponting, Hutchinson, London (1969) Arnold, H.J.P., Herbert Ponting: Another World, Photographs in the United States, Asia, Europe & Antarctica 1900–1912, Sidgwick & Jackson, London (1975)
